Reading between Ruptures: Literature and Reading Cultures in the 21st Century
This international workshop explores contemporary literary reading practices, asking how reading cultures are changing in the face of 21st century social, political, economic, media, attentional, [...] caesuras.
Literature has always existed in interaction with its readers, and changing reading cultures have transformed literary production, reception, and form. Today, digital media act as catalysts for participatory processes, with social media reading communities creating new collective formats for literary engagement. Which impact does this have on the literary system? How do ‘new’ and ‘established’ actors collaborate? And in which contexts does reading become a distinctly social experience today?
These questions and more will be examined in dialogue with historical shifts in reading cultures, changing relations between public and private reading spaces, and the (re-)structuring of reading communities. The workshop will also focus on the hybrid materialities of contemporary reading practices – between print and screen, e-books and audiobooks, and on transmedial formats. Particular attention will be given to the role of socio-economic and political factors that influence reading practices, to the reconfiguration of literary reading environments in the digital age, as well as to (post-)critical, affective, and reparative reading modes.
By bringing together comparative perspectives from literary, cultural, and media studies, the workshop highlights continuities, ruptures, and emerging horizons in 21st century literary reading cultures.

Weiter-Lesen: Welche Ressourcen braucht eine Zukunft des Lesens?Lesen ist ein lebendiges, kollektives Ökosystem und damit viel mehr als eine individuelle, ausschließlich bildungsrelevante Tätigkeit. Es wird getragen von sozialen, kulturellen, ökonomischen und materiellen Ressourcen und Beziehungen. Doch wie lässt sich dieses ‚Ökosystem Lesen‘ zukunftsfähig gestalten? Welche Verantwortung tragen Institutionen wie Verlage und Bibliotheken, Akteur*innen wie Journalist*innen und Literaturkritiker*innen und natürlich: Leser*innen? Wie können wir Lesekulturen nachhaltig weiterentwickeln – jenseits reiner Effizienzlogik?
Diese Fragen stehen im Mittelpunkt des Gesprächs mit unseren Gästinnen Isabella Caldart (Literaturvermittlerin | Journalistin), Cosima Schneider (Buchherstellung | Diplom-Designerin) und Anja Golebiowski (Referentin | Universitätsbibliothek Gießen), moderiert von Kirsten von Hagen (JLU Gießen).
Gemeinsam wollen wir über die gegenwärtigen Bedingungen und Möglichkeiten des Lesens in Zeiten gesellschaftlicher Transformationen und Zäsuren sprechen – vom Lesen als nachhaltige Praxis, von hybriden Leseumgebungen bis zu den unsichtbaren Ressourcen wie Zeit, Aufmerksamkeit und kulturelle Teilhabe. Wie entstehen neue, zukunftsorientierte Möglichkeitsräume des Lesens? Und wie bewegen wir uns darin?
Wir laden Sie sehr herzlich ein, mitzudenken und mitzudiskutieren: Wie sieht die Zukunft des Lesens aus?
