The PhD Program Travel Award

The PhD program offers a travel award to students enrolled in the program. Applications can be submitted by July 31 of each year and should be submitted, preferentially, before the actual congress date. To be eligible, applicants have to be accepted by the congress for an oral presentation. Applications should be submitted informally, stating why the congress is important for their research, and provide a confirmatory letter of the PhD supervisor, stating that he/she will support participation in the respective congress.

The travel award will be given as a personal grant to the PhD student (maximum amount of 500€) and should be used to cover costs for travel, accommodation, and registration fees. The awardee will receive a certificate, indicating the name of the awardee and the PhD program of Justus Liebig University, signed by the chair of the PhD board. Awards will be decided by October 1 at the regular annual meeting of the PhD board. The Travel Award should be used for participation in the congress applied for or another congress within the next 12 months, if the award was given after the congress date. Travel award winners should acknowledge support by the PhD travel award of Justus Liebig University in their presentation. An informative written report about their congress visit should be submitted within one month after the congress.

Submission of the Thesis

The earliest point in time to submit the thesis is the end of the third summer semester, provided that successful course work is documented by the appropriate number of credits (at least 300 in total). The thesis may be written in English or German. In exceptional cases, it may be submitted in another world language, with approval of the PhD Board.

Course of the Disputation

In case that the written thesis receives positive reviews from both the internal and the external reviewers, the examination board will invite the candidate to participate in an oral examination. The exam will consist of an oral presentation of the research project, followed by a scientific discussion to which all members of the university are invited. After this, there will be a non-public professional talk of at least 30 minutes, centering on special, as well as interdisciplinary aspects of the PhD training. During this talk, specific skills acquired in the field of the student's research, as well as adequate application of these methods will be evaluated. It is possible to contact the members of the examination board to discuss the topics of the oral examination some weeks before the disputation.
