Kursinhalte

Doctoral candidates repeatedly encounter demands from project management: Whether it is a matter of efficiently organizing their own scientific project, or planning their further career within or outside academia: project work and project management shape the working world in many areas. The workshop Managing Projects for Doctoral Candidates introduces the basic tools and concepts of Project Management, presents related IT tools and provides an insight into new trends such as agile projects. However, the main focus will be on how to use these tools to structure and plan the various tasks involved in qualifying as a scientist. Participants will be actively involved and work on different tasks throughout the workshop.

The workshops starts with the necessary definitions to clarify the scope of a project and to identify all relevant 'to-dos':

  • What is a project?
  • Order Clarification
  • Stakeholder analysis
  • Target planning
  • Risk analysis

Afterwards the various tasks are systematically and temporally organized. The tools presented here can be seen as the essential tools in project management:

  • Phase planning
  • Work breakdown structure
  • Operation List
  • Gantt Chart
  • Planning Ressources

(The tool 'Project Libre' will be presented and proved. This tool is extensive and freely available.)

The workshop consistently takes up the scientific context and highlights where project management in science differs from the 'mainstream'.
