The lecture examines the Ukraine war in the context of regional and domestic power politics: How can we explain the origins and escalation of the conflict? Is the culprit solely the Russian Federation or are also the 'West' and specifically NATO partly responsible for the conflict, and what has been the role of powerful oligarchs and other domestic-level actors within Ukraine? The lecture further analyses the EU's response to the conflict: Should the EU's member states have done more (or less) to support and protect Ukraine, and how do we explain the disunited and overall cautious approach of the EU vis-à-vis Russia? How serious are the EU's sanctions against Russia and have they been effective? And finally to what extent should the EU's current and future foreign policy strategies prioritise the Eastern Partnership countries and/or Russia?
