»The Corporate University and the Instrumentalisation of Risk and Security: A Political Ontology« Zeit:
Abstract: In light of a decline in state subsidies many South African universities have reverted to consultancy and the instrumentalisation of course offerings to stimulate income. This paper investigates the instrumentalisation of higher education. The discussion draws on extensive empirical work on the field of Disaster Risk Management, though it will also reflect on current initiatives to at North-West University to instrumentalise Political Studies through a focus on security. Both instances entail a politics of ontology as discourses developed in the North, are treated as universal truths in the South linked to notions of ‘relevance’, which constrain the ability of the South to make ontological statements.
