Technical seminar “Livestock value chains in Central Asia: status, challenges and policy”, 6 October 2025Venue: Hotel Frankfort, Ne'mat Street 4, 100160, Tashkent, Uzbekistan The seminar took stock of research findings so far and engages with national and international partners as well as policymakers to address current issues, discuss policy challenges and disseminate findings. Attendants from academia, research, agricultural administration, extension services and private sector in Uzbekistan were invited to join the seminar. Summer School “Quantitative analysis of agricultural development in Central Asia”, 30 September – 5 October 2024Venue: Center for Agricultural Reform and Innovation Studies (CARIS) at Samarkand Agroinnovations and Research University, Uzbekistan The Summer School combined theoretical lectures and practical exercises with discussion sessions on current issues of agricultural development in Central Asia. The participants gained competency in using statistical software for analysing agricultural survey data. They prepared and presented a research project on a pertinent livestock development topic based on exemplary micro-data made available by the instructors. For the practical exercises in data analysis, the participants were introduced to methods in R/RStudio. Sessions included lectures, discussions, group work, case study exercises and statistical analysis. The project examines the effects of recent political rapprochement on economic and scientific cooperation between the neighbouring countries Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The focus is on the newly emerging trade opportunities for high-value and perishable fresh livestock products and access to pasture land in the border area between the two countries around the Tajik province of Sughd. The project connects the national research institutions relevant in this field with the international scientific community and offers targeted further training measures by third parties. The interdisciplinary project consortium includes Justus Liebig University in Gießen, three research institutes in Central Asia as well as the Central Asia office of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Based on own primary data collection, the project participants investigate the situation of animal husbandry in the project region. |

| Within the framework of a kick-off workshop in Khujand, the project working group has meanwhile been constituted from members of the partner organisations. Irina Hopp, research assistant at ZEU coordinates the project activities and conducts her own empirical research within the framework of a dissertation on the project topic. In the course of the research project, a summer school on the methodology of empirical research in the project region in combination with qualitative field research is planned. The project participants jointly conduct empirical research on the impact of the political and economic rapprochement between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan on the livestock sector. To this end, the project will collect data from livestock farmers, traders and processors in the form of structured surveys in the second and third project years. In addition, a training event on herd management will be held for multipliers in Central Asia in the second project year. In the fourth project year, the project results will be presented at a final workshop in Gießen. The dissertation and a final report will incorporate the project results and thus form the basis for further scientific publications. | |
