In this seminar I will present a critical account of the allegedly “sustainable development model” implemented in Ecuador between 2009 and 2017. Ecuador is endowed with an astonishing biodiversity, with more than one third of its territory located in the Amazon rainforest. Unfortunately, most of its oil extraction operations are also located there. After the approval of a new constitution in 2008, that recognized “Buen Vivir” as a central objective of collective action, the country’s planning institution proposed a development plan oriented to overcome the country’s reliance on fossil fuel exports. I will present the main characteristics of this plan, describing key elements of its implementation process, in order to identify some obstacles, shortcomings, and lessons for the future.

Panelists:

Jorge Enrique Forerois a SDGNexus postdoctoral researcher, based at the Environment and Sustainability area of the Simon Bolivar Andean University in Ecuador. His research work has been focused on critical political economy, policy analysis and political dynamics in Latin America.
