Abstract

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are generally hailed as moving society towards sustainability. However, the SDGs are very much based on the concept of economic growth. From a degrowth perspective this is problematic. Degrowth scholarship critiques the endless pursuit of economic growth and in a wider sense the capitalist social formation are the root cause(s) of climate change and ecological degradation as well as social inequality.

In this talk Dr. Robra will present an interpretation of sustainability closely aligned with both degrowth and ecological economics scholarship. From this basis, economic growth as well as prominent concepts such as decoupling and green growth are problematised. Ultimately the talk will conclude with a critique of the SDGs as well as its historic emergence and conceptualisation as a tool to continue the endless pursuit of economic growth.
