Abstract

We are delighted to announce a seminar that will focus on the impacts of extreme weather events and droughts on natural and human systems in mountainous regions. The event will feature presentations by Ph.D. students from the University of Cuenca, who will showcase their research on the subject.

Gabriela Urgiles will present a study that examines the spatio-temporal characteristics of extreme rainfall events in the Ecuadorian Andes using clustering approaches. The region has experienced severe weather conditions that have caused harm to ecosystems, economic losses, and human casualties. The study offers a novel perspective on the variability of rainfall in the tropical mountain range and sheds light on the characteristics of extreme rainfall events in the region.

Adrián Sucozhañay's research focuses on characterizing streamflow droughts in the southern Ecuadorian Andes. By employing the threshold method, the study identifies streamflow droughts and calculates their duration, magnitude, and intensity. The findings provide valuable insights into the identification and characterization of streamflow droughts in poorly researched areas like the Andes. This information can be used to enhance water resource management practices and evaluate water stress scenarios.

This seminar will be of interest to researchers, practitioners, and policymakers interested in the impacts of extreme weather events and droughts on natural and human systems in mountainous regions, and the importance of effective water resource management in the face of climate change.
