The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Environmental Management invites applications for a

W2 Professorship in Life Cycle Assessment

as of October 1st, 2026. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.

Duties:

You will be responsible for teaching in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Environmental Management. Participation in the further development of degree programs, also in English, is desired. Transferring research and teaching to other faculties of the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), such as the Faculty of Business Studies and Economics, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics, Geography and/or the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry, is encouraged. A willingness to participate in interdisciplinary research projects and in the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL) is expected, as well as a commitment to the further internationalization of the faculty.

In research, the professorship will focus on life cycle assessment. On the one hand, existing methods such as life cycle assessment or material flow analysis are to be applied and further developed. On the other hand, there will be a thematic focus on the energy sector. Here, questions relating to energy generation, distribution, efficiency, storage and utilization can be considered. Spatial analyses are of particular interest, as questions of land use represent a core research area within the faculty. Your research can therefore also extend to associated environmental analyses, such as those of land use systems or bioeconomy topics. Your research is expected to be integrated into existing research networks at JLU, such as the area of potential ‘Bioresources (Focus: Insects)’ or the accent area ‘Biodiversity and global change’.

Furthermore, a willingness to participate in the development of the Center for Sustainable Food Systems (ZNE) and/or the Center for International Development and Environmental Research (ZEU) is expected. Consideration of gender aspects in research and teaching is desired.

Requirements:

We are looking for a person who has a comprehensive understanding of the methods and applications of life cycle assessment in research and teaching. Due to the importance of energy supply and the necessary transformation of the energy sector, in which questions of land use are highly relevant, you should also have experience in this area.

Pedagogic aptitude and the ability to teach in English are required.

A university degree, an outstanding, thematically relevant doctorate and additional academic achievements (proven e.g., by a habilitation or relevant peer-reviewed publications) in the field of life cycle assessment are also required.

You should also demonstrate success in the independent acquisition of external funding.

In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.

The JLU aims to employ more women in academic research. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. JLU also pursues the goal at faculty leadership level of increased competence in dealing with gender and family-related issues. JLU is regarded as a family-friendly university. Applicants with children are very welcome. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.

We strongly recommend candidates to refer to our fact sheet on application procedures.

Please send your application with the required documents via online form to the President of Justus Liebig University Giessen by October 24th, 2024, quoting the reference number 9-11/24.
