Workshop description

Permanent positions within the academic system are still rare. Currently, a professorship, along with a small number of other permanent positions, remains one of the few opportunities to establish oneself in academia in the long term. On the path to a lasting perspective in academia, early-career researchers face decisions on how to successfully navigate their personal journey.

The challenge lies in increasing opportunities and minimizing risks to succeed in the competition within their respective fields. The workshop discusses current and evolving conditions, working on developing strategies for concrete steps. Career components necessary for a long-term research career are examined, with reflection on participants' specific CVs.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Gain an overview of current and evolving conditions in the academic system.
  • Learn about opportunities and challenges and how to consider them.
  • Assess their current performance level in relation to the required career components for a permanent position in academia.
  • Understand how to plan their next career steps to achieve their goals.
  • Explore whether and how they want to further position themselves within the academic system.
  • Through coaching, analyze individual career steps, identify potential obstacles, and find suitable solutions.

Methods

The trainer will include a mixture of tools for the training:

  • Information and knowledge transfer
  • Small group work
  • Discussion rounds
  • Analysis sheets for self and group work
  • Metaphorical methods
  • Systemic career coaching
