By aiming to discuss new study directions about the ambiguous position of women in the formation of the nation-states in Europe, this workshop examines how the recent flourishing European feminist scholarship on women´s history and nationalism can be challenged by using in an innovative way the Homi Bhabba´s postcolonial concept of hybridity. This concept will be applied in relation to Benedict Anderson´s concept of the nation-states as "imagined communities", in order to analyze the negotiation of gender, religious and cultural identities of women by women in a fragmented society on its way to becoming national. The case-study used is the history of a group of Protestant women teachers in nineteenth-century Italy.  Through readings of the mentioned-above authors and my own research on the topic, the participants will be encouraged to reflect and discuss the (contested) applicability of using concepts in Humanities and Social Sciences within an interdisciplinary approach, here "hybridity" applied to Women´s History.
