Prof. Laurinda Jaffe is Chair of the Department of Cell Biology at the University of Connecticut Health Center, USA. She has been awarded with many prizes, amongst others with the Loeser Award for Outstanding Teaching and with a Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She has been invited numerous times to present her scientific work throughout the world.

The talk will be about the physiological mechanisms that regulate the oocyte cell cycle and fertilization. Currently, Laurinda Jaffe’s studies are focused on regulation of meiosis in mouse ovarian follicles. Meiosis prepares the oocyte for fertilization, by reducing the number of copies of each gene from two to one, such that the female and male genomes from oocytes and sperm can combine to make a new individual. For further information, please visit the website of her lab.

After the talk, we would very much like to have a discussion first about Prof. Jaffe’s research, and second about the process of her career including obstacles and solutions. During the discussion parts you are very welcome to ask questions.

Everybody who is interested is welcome to attend the guest lecture. At the end of the event, all female doctoral students will have the opportunity in a private "Meet the Professor" session to exchange views about research and career issues with Prof. Jaffe. If you would like to participate, please write to Lisa-Marie Junker.
