Prof. Susanne Hartmann is Head of
the Institute of Immunology at the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Free
University Berlin. Throughout her academic career, she has been committed to
the investigation of parasites. After her PhD and career entry as Scientific
Assistant, both at the University of Stuttgart Hohenheim, she worked at the
Humboldt University Berlin for 16 years as University Assistant, Group Leader
and Assistant Professor.
In her current research at the Free University Berlin,
she focuses on chronic infections with parasitic helminths, particularly
parasitic nematodes, and various aspects of the interactions between host and
parasite. In this guest lecture, she will go into detail about the
characteristics of nematodes that have an effect on the host’s immune system.
After Prof. Hartmann’s talk, the audience is encouraged to ask her anything they would like to know about her research and also career path. This event is part of the inspiring and career-oriented lecture series “Perspectives”, organized by the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL). Female researchers present their pioneering and recent findings from various life science disciplines. Moreover, they bring along valuable and handy career tips for students and graduates regarding which support and grants they took advantage of and which are the most important issues one has to bear in mind for starting a successful career in science and industry. Apart from that, these role models sensitize the audience for equal opportunities between men and women and give insights into how they master the compatibility of parenthood with work life. Anyone interested is very welcome to attend this guest lecture, which is held in English.
