Thisbe Lindhorst is Chair of Organic
and Biological Chemistry at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, and Head
of a research lab with specific interest in glycosciences and the biological
function of the glycocalyx. “The glycocalyx is a highly complex sugar coating,
which is typical and important for every eukaryotic cell. In addition to its
relevance for the human organism it is also used by an armada of microorganisms
to latch on to cell surfaces” (source
and further information).
She has been awarded various awards and is active
as Board Member of the German
Chemical Society (GDCh) and of
AcademiaNet, a project for promoting female leaders in science.
After Prof. Lindhorst’s talk, the audience is encouraged to ask her anything they would like to know about her research and also career path. This event is part of the inspiring and career-oriented lecture series “Perspectives”, organized by the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL). Female researchers present their pioneering and recent findings from various life science disciplines. Moreover, they bring along valuable and handy career tips for students and graduates regarding which support and grants they took advantage of and which are the most important issues one has to bear in mind for starting a successful career in science. Apart from that, these role models sensitize the audience for equal opportunities between men and women and give insights into how they master the compatibility of parenthood with work life. Anyone interested is very welcome to
attend this guest lecture, which is held in English.
