Petra Schwille

Prof. Dr. Petra Schwille is Director of the Department Cellular and Molecular Biophysics at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and honorary professor at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich (Physics Faculty).

Her current research is focused on single-molecule methods, cell and membrane biophysics, and synthetic biology. She has been awarded numerous awards and fellowships such as the prestigious Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

In her guest lecture “Synthetic Biology: A Biophysicist's View”, Prof. Dr. Petra Schwille will go into detail about her current work in the field of synthetic biology. Apart from that, Prof. Dr. Schwille is willing to give insights into how she masters the compatibility of parenthood with work life. Being a mother of three girls, Prof. Schwille supports women, who continue doing research while having children.

After the talk, the audience is encouraged to ask Prof. Dr. Petra Schwille about her personal career path as a successful woman in science. The scientific part of the event will be hosted by Prof. Dr. Martin Eickhoff (Physical Institute at the JLU Gießen - Nanomaterials). It is the last part of the inspiring and career-oriented series of lectures “Perspectives” organised by the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL) in cooperation with the Laboratorium für Materialforschung (LaMa) and the International Research Training Group GRK 1384. Female researchers present their pioneering and recent findings from various life science disciplines. They additionally bring along valuable and handy career tips for students and graduates regarding the grants they took advantage of, or the most important issues one has to bear in mind for starting a successful career in science.

For more information on the series of lectures, please have a look at our “Perspectives” website.

Everybody interested is very welcome to attend this guest lecture, which is held in English.
