The subject of Systematic Theology is the foundations and essential contents of the Christian faith. Systematic Theology interprets the central formulas and forms of belief from their historical contexts of development, and at the same time strives to re-open the faith for the present, to make it plausible for contemporaries, and to justify it reasonably. Context-relatedness, time diagnostics, and interdisciplinary exchange with other sciences are thus part of the necessary methodological repertoire of systematic theology.
Systematic Theology at the Institute for Catholic Theology at the JLU Giessen is characterised by the confrontation with societal processes of secularisation and their challenges for faith and the church. Inspired by the Second Vatican Council and in the wake of political and liberating theologies, it is sensitive to the social and political dimensions of being a Christian and faces up to Christian responsibility for a humane society. Systematic theology at the Institute of Catholic Theology in Giessen is ecumenical and engages in interreligious dialogue.
