100 Advertisements
100 Advertisements is an ongoing project where I create advertisements for imaginary products or services that might “improve my life” (and yours!), during the coronavirus pandemic. The project started in March 2020, when Germany entered its first lockdown. Some advertisements are wishes for a better world; others are unfunny jokes from the darkest part of my soul! Together, they are my corona-diary, a personal documentation of these times from the perspective of an international student in Germany.

ATLAS' WIRBEL | CONTAINER
LOSE COMBO feat. Sonar Quartett After having to be postponed twice, the materials of LOSE COMBO’s most recent work has been stowed into digital containers. Some of which are now accessible on the web: as ATLAS' WIRBEL | CONTAINER. In April, the Reinbeckhallen in Oberschöneweide became a performative laboratory for LOSE COMBO’s cartographic experiment. Together with Sonar Quartett countless mythological, literary, etymological, anatomical and geographical entanglements of Atlas were explored. In their lectures, Claudia Splitt and Florian Feigl tell of remote volcanic islands and rare birds, of Greek gods, ancient historians and postmodern encyclopedias, referring to anecdotes and geographical descriptions. While the musicians of Sonar Quartett navigate through Jörg Laue's cartographic composition STRICH, based on the first Portolan map, the so-called Carta Pisana. The CONTAINER version of ATLAS’ WIRBEL invites its audience to browse through 9 to 17 minute sequences of materials and remixes that accentuate different aspects of the work. Insights to scores and text materials, video excerpts and tape recordings, as well as stagings of concerts and text performances. Instead of (or rather: bridging the gap to) a life performance, ATLAS' WIRBEL | CONTAINER will be unveiled on June 14th, 2021.

ask me twice
The Ensemble S201 and artist Kanade Hamawaki are going to present a film "frag mich 2 mal"(ask me twice) and bring art and new music out of their closed contexts: critical discussions with everyday life collide with balloon performances and screeching woodwinds. The question of the relationship between one's own and other worlds is posed and encouraged to speculate about life and death.

Aus dem Innenleben eines Staubsaugerbeutels
Dust: work or aesthetics? Dust is everywhere, autonomous – as gray dust mice or in smallest particles – it floats through our lives. As the color of all colors, it reveals itself to be a medium, material or disturbance – and fills vacuum cleaner bag after vacuum cleaner bag.
äöü take a closer look at the "Black Box" brand and dissect this dirty, grey and small-scale archive of our everyday lives. A search for the beauty of dust, for form and content, life and death, wage labor and gender, magic and engineering.
Dust: an operetta, a vacuum cleaner concert, explosions of light.

Body Boom Boom Brain (Vol. II) - no one escapes p*b*rt*y
During the Corona pandemic, something strange is happening in a theatre somewhere in Germany: the empty auditorium is hitting puberty. In their short thriller “Body Boom Boom Brain”, PINSKER+BERNHARDT invite (indeed!) everyone over the age of 12 to explore fucking p*b*rt*y as the ultimate brain-body-killer of all human conditions. The theatre becomes a physical laboratory, in which growing pimples and pubic hair take over, while the staff tries to get to the bottom of this absurd spectacle. Digitaler Mousonturm

Cotton flowers exist / Baumwoll blumen gibt es
The choreographic piece Cotton flowers exist brings into dialogue the actual with the virtual and connects the materiality of the world with the capacity to imagine and create non existing landscapes. More precisely it is an attempt to explore what connects the practice of drawing, choreographing and walking. It brings into conversation three different forms of writing in three different scales: the writing on the surface of a notebook by drawing, on the floor of a stage by choreographing/dancing and what it is written on bodies while walking/strolling outdoors. My intention is to bring into light these highly idiosyncratic inner landscapes that have been inscribed into drawings and translate them into artificial landscapes/room installations. Using my drawings as scores I tried to translate the two dimensional images into moving images. The relation of the body to the cotton was the main agency that made possible the embodiment of the drawings. In the choreographic work Cotton Flowers exist, cotton is used as a material whose aesthetic value becomes the experience of the performance. But actually cotton is a symbol with economic and social connotations. It is a material that signals class and race. It is a symbol of struggle. Therefore, bringing into the performance the social, economic and political context of the cotton production in order to avoid the hyper – aesthetization of cotton was an imperative ethical responsibility. In October 2020, I visited northern Greece where the cultivation of cotton is very common and together with the film maker Artemis Anastasiadou, we interviewed and filmed the cotton producers of the neighbourhood I grew up. The focus of this research was to give voice to the cotton producers of three different generations reflecting on the socio – economic and political conditions of their micro society.

Dancer in the Dark
„In the dark times of neoliberalism and rising neofascism – what else is there left (to dance)?“
„Dancer In The Dark“ is a second performance of trilogy „swan song dances“, first part „TEKHNE“ premiered at „Baltoscandal“ festival 2020. „Dancer In the Dark“ is a performance which weaves together text and dance and storytellingdance&dancestorytelling. Its a performance series which oscillates between deeply personal, mythical and political. If the banal and the daily can no longer (where they ever?) be left outside of the rehearsel stage (maybe now more than ever?) – choreographer askes herself what is she willing to „stage“ at these troubling times. Is she even willing to „stage“ anything anymore? Lets see.
Or maybe not.

Daydreaming the Archive
The guests are taken through an affective cartography of the city, woven between a lost and a regained sense of orientation: from someone’s narrative of childhood memories of war in Bosnia in a Frankfurt doll clinic to the conjuring of someone else’s Buenos Aires through opera singing in the streets of Bornheim, from redoing, at Frankfurt’s main cemetery, the steps walked many times in different latitudes to soundscapes that speak of lost, failed or awaited photographs from family and city archives.
Daydreaming the Archive is an (im)possible collaboration of a group of artists and post_migrants, who fail to meet as one group because of the pandemic and working conditions. Walking through the city they inquire into daydreaming as place-making in an urban space, how dislocated memories yield other ways of inhabiting the city, and how post_migrants become travelers in their own city.
It's possible to start at either Bornheim U Höhenstraße (only at 15:00) or at Hauptfriedhof (at 15:00 and 16:00).

deep net fake hole dark rabbit
deep net fake hole dark rabbit is a lo-fi-archeology of being-online, addressing the internet as a space of orientation and of missing out, of connection and exclusion. Reconstructing her browser history, Caroline Creutzburg searches for gaps in order to retrospectively write herself into the biography of the www. Wrestling with user-generated online culture and big tech’s teflon-capitalism, the work aims for a protest beyond dystopian mainstream-platitudes.

DER WAGEN. Ein Theater- Roadmovie durch Deutschland
In summer 2019, the theater ensemble buehnendautenheims undertakes an unlikely tour through Germany. It travels as a hiking troupe, with a 100-year-old hay wagon stage across the country - from Dautenheim in Rhenish Hesse to Berlin. In their luggage they carry the stage play "The Great Theater of the World" by Pedro Calderón de la Barca. Every day, the ensemble covers 40 kilometers; every evening, they perform in marketplaces, outdoor swimming pools, and in front of churches and castles.
The experiences of their journey are now transformed into a documentary theatrical Roadmovie. "DER WAGEN" offers an unusual glance at Germany, from the countryside to the city, from West to East, through the centuries.
With their specially built cinema bus, the buehnendautenheims repeat their journey from August 14 - 22, 2021. Along the itinerary of their baroque theater tour, they will once again stop at nine selected stations and show the experiences condensed into 90 minutes.
Each stop will also be shown in the film.
Popcorn and cold drinks will be available at the cinema store.

d-escoundering
Was ist Begegnung?

DISKURS 35
DISKURS is a festival at the interface between art and theory. Since 1984 it has been organized annually or biennially at the Institute for Applied Theater Studies in Gießen.
We confront the ongoing pandemic situation with the greatest possible permeability. Since the beginning of this crisis, the cultural scene has been riddled, conditioned, shaken and inspired by porosity. Therefore, this year we invite artistic, theoretical and conceptual positions that provide approaches to address the motto porous.
The diverse program of performances, installations, lectures and workshops will take place in hybrid form, both analog and digital, and invites citizens, students, art and culture professionals and researchers to exchange and discuss.
Let's Celebrate the Porous! Let's Stay Porous!

echoes of you(s)
echoes of you(s) is a collective drift, a temporary dislocation of the subject. It moves inside multi-layered temporalities and durations, leaking away from the present moment to unfold in the imagination of the viewer. Patterns erode away, leaving tenuous traces; they make tunnels across time (I think I’m adrift inside them). In echoes of you(s) Gry Tingskog and Amina Szecsödy weave together sculpture, embroidery, dance, sound and technology. In this meeting of choreography, performance and installation, they explore what happens to our bodies in the dark.

37 (excerpt)
I am happy to invite you to a showing of an excerpt of my work "37" at Tanzfestival Rhein-Main in the frame of "Choreographische Werkstatt":
37 is a solo which deals with the relation between the concrete space and the concrete body, between watching and being watched and the always-already absent present. It takes place in the left-overs of the performance before which stays present in the traces of the past and as an imagination of some thing which is still to come. The grey in the space takes over, everything is in between. The spectator experiences 37 minutes of form and movement in different scales and distances and a dance which leaves behind the blurred outlines of what is not present.

Dust everywhere. In the cracks of computer keyboards, on the leaves of our houseplants, in the fabric of your finest dress. No matter how often we remove it, it returns and reminds us how all living things turn into dust.

Autumn School: Imagination, Institutions, Precarity
2nd of December till 6th of December 2019
ATW, Justus-Liebig University Giessen
@ the Georg Büchner Saal, Bismarkstr. 37, 35390 Gießen
Autumn school is part of the research network on the future of imaginary institutions, which was established by several partners (EEPAP, Lublin, Nomad Dance Academy Ljubljana, Institute for Applied Theatre Studies, Justus Liebig University, Giessen, BADCo, Zagreb, CollectivA, Cluj, Lokomotiva Skopje) and is supported by the Allianz Stiftung.
We are inviting young artists, students, professionals, writers and thinkers to engage together in the imagining of the alternatives of working and being together, reacting to the populist and nationalist wave in Europe. We would like to examine new institutionalization, practices and modes of producing, especially related to the work of the young artists, who are working in the increasingly but also precarious international field and at the same time fighting for the right to work and remain in their local surrounding, fighting nationalism and populist pressure. We will exchange and share models and practices, current and historical one, which insist on the creation of experiments, feminist, radical and progressive practices, which insists on equality, solidarity and work against the populist political imagination.
The school is developed as a platform, where young artists and students, who are at the end of their studies or just finished, can meet other cultural workers and thinkers, who have a strong political and social agenda. How to discuss about the political and cultural needs together, how to practice solidarity, support and inclusion? How to think about the internationalization in the time, which is marked by a flow of commodities and neo-liberal globalization? What does it mean to work and study internationally in the time of the art market and its accelerated modes of evaluation? Can we develop new temporal modes of working and thinking and how can we learn from each other?
Participants: The participants will be, among others, Dragana Alfirević, Miki Braniste, Ana Dubljević, Ida Daniel, Valeria Graziano, Viktorija Ilioska, Goran Injac, Katarzyna Kania, Marta Keil, Joanna Krakowska, Romuald Krężel, Bojana Kunst, Livia Piazza, Iulia Popovici, Goran Sergej Pristaš, Tanja Šljivar, Solidarity for Theatre, Swoosh Lieu, Biljana Tanurovska-Kjulavkovski, Zrinka Užbinec, Rok Vevar, Ana Vujanović.
Please note that some seminars and discussions are public and others are closed. Check our timetable for further information.

Ave Maria
der grosse tyrann (the great tyrant) is a feminist performance collective made up of Liliane Koch and Maude Hélène Vuilleumier that deals with feminine self-staging and self-presentation in a humorous way. In AVE MARIA, der grosse tyrann goes out in search for the most holy of feminine idols, the most portrayed woman in the world: Maria. They begin to investigate their own behavioural patterns.
Hail Mary, full of grace, blessed are you among women. You are written into me, a Western-Christian influenced woman. You are the idol that I never wanted, the mother, that I never asked for. You gave me my endless empathy, my acquiescence and the beguiling smile with my head tilted at an angle. But have you ever laughed properly? And what will we find, when we look under your royal blue skirt? Holy Mary, pray for us sinners who love to sin. Now and in the hour of our death. Amen.

Being With Sound Through The Tension Of Desire
How does decolonizing the personal and collective intimacy sound like?
Touching – an act of transmission – has become somewhat desensitized, associated with boundaries and relegated to the negative. Being With Sound Through The Tension Of Desire is a work that attempts to reappropriate touch and to celebrate inter-dependency, vulnerability, closeness, disorientation, and trust, as forms of collective decolonial resistance.
Two bodies will compose, perform and deconstruct sound through the use of touch as a primary compositional element, asking itself in the process - how touch can be decolonized and reclaimed as a form of care, connection and transmission, a positive reinforcement, a constructive act that surpasses the purely physical spheres, an act which in such a context is undeniably political.

Bird Bird, Touch Touch, Sing Sing - A Song For Dislocated Diasporic Bodies
The work "Bird Bird, Touch Touch, Sing Sing" celebrates inter-dependency, vulnerability, closeness, disorientation, and trust, as forms of collective decolonial resistance.
A quiet coup attempting to displace the structural imbalances, to disorientate geographies, and to find space for silenced narratives. An (auto)reflexive re-evaluation of the unquestionable hierarchy of values imposed unto Us, a living work which attempts to embody extantation – to persist on existing despite conditions that favour its imminent extinction. In this work, the performers attempt to create another reality - through touching, proximity, and movements, that is not pre-choreographed but created in the moment by the circumstances within the process of creating the sound and by the movements of the performers+audience becoming a collective body - a space of disassociation unloaded with the social constructs associated with the politics of touch found in the modern world and the geography associated with it. Where to choreograph, compose and perform in this case, goes beyond the narrow confines of artistic concepts and aesthetics, existing in both the space of the ethereal and the space of an immersive installative performance. To process feelings, thoughts and intentions on the peripheral spectrum between the knowing and the unknowing, Nguyễn + Transitory hope to be one of the few ways left to reconnect with lost magic.

Castor&&Pollux
The music theater piece "Castor&&Pollux" interconnects Jean-Philippe Rameaus baroque opera telling the ancient myth on the love between two siblings and their wish for immortality with its contemporary counterpart from the tech-utopias deriving from the Silicon Valley. Clap Hands! – how to disappear completely
I will break it down with an example. Your phone rings in the middle of the night and a machine made voice is saying: I’m gonna kill you in less than 5 minutes with a gun!
Which one is more important for you: staying alive or understanding who’s voice it is?
„Clap Hands! – how to disappear completely“ is a theatre machine which is developed and organized to become an artist itself and make theatre without demand. It will transform electric intensity into an artistic approach.

DANSÖZ
*
The project Dansöz aims to locate ‘oriental dance(s)’ as a serious dance genre in the Western European art landscape and to develop an artistic positioning to it. The ‘belly dance’ is its central motif, including, among other things, the orientalist, eroticized and exoticized image of women and its detoxification from a feminist perspective. The aim is to create a space and a language of self-empowerment based on the ‘belly dance’ style and to bring it to the agenda of the dance scene as a ‘serious’ and/or ‘artistic’ and emancipated dance genre.

A B S A T Z
From the outside, A B S A T Z is a box. It invites you to discover its monolithic architecture. Inside, there is intimate quiet solitude. If you follow the pull of light, you can meet the protagonist from Kafka's story „The Cares of a Housefather", the word O D R A D E K. It scurries through the picture, rustles in the wall, tells its story and demands a turnaround at the end. The whole thing looks senseless enough, but in its own way perfectly finished.

ALICE CHAUCHAT, VALENTINA DESIDERI, AND GEORG DÖCKER
TALK ABOUT THE PRACTICE OF PRACTICE
Roughly since the mid-2000s, French choreographer Alice Chauchat and her Italian colleague Valentina Desideri, along with other practitioners such as Jennifer Lacey or Myriam Lefkowitz, have been engaging in the creation and sharing of performative practices. Being organised in the form of a loose, open network, they have been using the frameworks of workshops, residencies, and similar formats in order to develop a mode of performative exploration that is no longer centred around the idea of performance as in presenting an event to an audience. Instead, their practices aim at the facilitation of an aesthetic, ethical, or socio-political experience based on two or more participants unfolding mostly task-based actions in direct exchange with each other.
Although their approaches are situated at the margins of the contemporary performing arts, they have proven to be influential for a younger generation of graduating students who, these days, equally seem to question the very value and purpose of performance making. In a conversation with ATW member of staff Georg Döcker, Alice and Valentina will discuss the beginnings of their working with practices as well as their opinions on the further potential of practice-based work.
***
Taking place in a monthly interval since the end of 2015, the ATW TALKS are an open format for discussion organised by the ATW, the Institut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft, Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, Germany. The aim of the ATW TALKS is to create a forum for debating contemporary dance, theatre, and performance, thereby contributing to the academic and artistic discourse in the city, in the Hessian performing arts scene and beyond. What is often considered an advantage of the ATW is equally true for the talks: hidden away from a general public with its necessity for self-representation, the context in Gießen offers a unique possibility for intense, extensive, and critical exchange. Each edition of the ATW TALKS is moderated by members of staff working at the institute. Invitations are extended to artists and academics from the performing arts and affiliated disciplines. The talks are generally conducted in English, on certain occasions though, they might be held in German or French.

“MAKING INSTITUTIONS POROUS” : CONDITIONS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ART AND THE ART OF PRODUCING — Since 2013, Alexandra Baudelot, together with her colleagues Dora García and Mathilde Villeneuve, is co-director of Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, an arts centre located in the banlieues of the north of Paris—an industrial workers melting pot and immigration hub. This exceptional place for art and research, projects and theory welcomes, as the team puts it, artistic practices rather than artistic disciplines. And more importantly, at les Labos, art is confronted with what happens outside of the artistic context, relating artistic practice to the neighbourhood and to the people who live in Aubervilliers.
In EDITION NO. 21 of the ATW TALKS, Alexandra Baudelot will discuss les Labos’ approach to the production of art and the art of producing with ATW member of staf Bernhard Siebert. The talk will present the institution in Aubervilliers including some of the artistic projects that have been developed at the location in the last years. Moreover, the discussion will aim for more general questions, touching on the possibilities and limits of site-specifcity, on the expectations of artists, producers, and audiences in this context, and on ideal working and co-working conditions for artistic production.

AND BOJANA KUNST
—THE WHITE HOLE AND OTHER STORIES. ALEPPO, A PLATTFORM FOR THE ARTISTIC AND THEORETICAL ENGAGEMENT WITH PERFORMANCE AND POLITICS—
Aleppo is not only the name of a city in Northern Syria, but also that of an independent, Brussels-based performing arts project founded by researcher and curator Daniel Blanga Gubbay. Every season, Aleppo opens a free and public program of artistic interventions, performances, lectures, screenings, and reading groups emerging from a specific question with political relevance. This particular format was inspired by the science-fiction astronomic model of the “white hole,” which, similar to the black hole, denotes a fracture of space, but as opposed to the black hole, the white hole releases energy in a continuous manner instead of absorbing it. The white hole unleashes a stream of unsolved questions from a specific point, around which a series of people might gather.
Starting from this conceptual framework of Aleppo, Daniel Blanga Gubbay will discuss the various activities of Aleppo as well as questions about the institution, the notions of dependency, and time. What are the institutional and temporal preconditions for coming together in order to engage, metaphorically speaking, in the production of white holes? The conversation will be chaired by ATW professor Bojana Kunst.

Correspondence #1 on the importance of time and place, the territory
A lecture-performance fruit of the collaboration between Li Lorian (Jerusalem) and Marc Villanueva Mir (Barcelona). What starts as a lecture on spatial conceptualization of utopian and dystopian thinking, transforms into a travel through personal archives, political statements, accents, screenshots, bookmarks, subtitles and voice-overs.
Correspondence #1 aims to draw a visual and conceptual journey between Jerusalem, Barcelona and Gießen; a collage of memories, observations and representations of the multiple and complex realities we inhabit and that at the same time inhabit us.
Using the performative power and discourse that both utopia and dystopia nowadays entail, we explore interferences between actual and ideal, politics and literature, reality and fiction, spaces and places, in order to revisit the cities and landscapes we come from and our concerns with them, and to question the role they play in constituting our sense of home and notion of belonging.

Transit, the passing from one situation to another, the aesthetic or social migration to a new territory which often remains an idea, which is sometimes reached but occasionally remains unattainable. From this year’s International Composition Seminar of the International Ensemble Modern Academy, five very different musical positions of younger composers have emerged: highly individual and idiosyncratic studies of time and space, studies on the constant movement of sounds and people, on changing locations and perspectives.

VICTORIA PEREZ ROYO AND BERNHARD SIEBERT
TALK ABOUT
REINVENTING RESEARCH
ATW TALKS
EDITION NO. 14
IN COOPERATION WITH
NEUER KUNSTVEREIN GIESSEN
What does artistic research look like in practice? And how, on the other hand, can academic research use artistic strategies to meet artworks? Victoria Pérez Royo, our guest for EDITION NO 14. of the ATW TALKS, has been creating contexts for artists’ research as well as researchers’ art investigations over the last years. At the intersection of politics, dance, performance and visualisation practices, she challenges the position of research itself in order to find a way to discuss productions, and production processes. Let’s talk experimental writing, institutional critique, and Roland Barthes on February 1 at 6.00 PM.
Victoria Pérez Royo is a performing arts researcher based in Berlin, and Madrid. She is the co-director of the M.A. program in Performing Arts Practice and Visual Culture in Madrid, and assistant professor of Aesthetics at the University of Zaragoza. As a guest professor, she has been invited to international B.A. and M.A. programs in the performing arts in Finland, Holland, Germany, Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, amongst others. Perez Royo is a member of the research association ARTEA. Recent publications comprise "Dirty Room" (with Juan Dominguez, in press), "Componer el plural. Escena, cuerpo, política" (with Diego Agulló, 2016), and “To be continued. "10 textos en cadena y unas páginas en blanco" (with Cuqui Jerez, 2012).
ATW TALKS / EDITION NO. 14 / Wednesday, 1/2/2017, 6.00 PM / ATW, Room A 118, Karl-Glöckner-Straße 21, Phil. II, Haus A, D-35394 Gießen
The ATW TALKS are a series of talks and lectures at the ATW, the Institut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft at Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen. They have been taking place in a monthly interval since the end of 2015. The aim of the ATW TALKS is to create a forum for discussions on contemporary dance, theatre and performance, contributing to the academic and artistic discourse at the institute, in the city and in the Hessian theatre landscape. What is often considered an advantage of the ATW, will be equally true for the talks and lectures: hidden away from a general public with its necessity for self-representation, the context in Gießen offers a unique possibility for an open exchange with a critical perspective, for intense and extensive debates. Each edition of the ATW TALKS will be moderated by members of staff working at the institute. Invitations are extended to artists and academics from the performing arts and affiliated disciplines. The talks and lectures will generally be conducted in English, on certain occasions though, they might be conducted in German or French.
In Winter 2016/2017, the ATW TALKS are being organised in collaboration with Neuer Kunstverein Gießen in the frame of Making Theatre Now, a series of events on the aesthetics of production in contemporary performance. Making Theatre Now is kindly supported by Gießener Hochschulgesellschaft and Kulturamt Gießen.

“WITH THE HAIR LOOSE"
DANAE THEODORIDOU AND GEORG DÖCKER
TALK ABOUT DRAMATURGICAL ACTIONS
IN NEOLIBERAL CAPITALISM
From 2013 to 2015, performance maker and researcher Danae Theodoridou, in collaboration with Konstantina Georgelou and Efrosini Protopapa, conducted a practice-based research project entitled „Dramaturgy at Work“ in theatres, universities and alternative spaces all over Europe. Through a series of workshops and discussions, the project explored dramaturgy, its key principles in contemporary practice and its political implications in the context of neoliberal capitalism. The results of the research were put together in a publication which was published under the title The Practice of Dramaturgy. Working on Actions in Performance (Valiz, 2017).
In EDITION NO. 15 of the ATW TALKS, Danae will be in Gießen to discuss the research process and the book with ATW member of staff Georg Döcker. The discussion will give special focus to the political agency of dramaturgy that can be deduced from the etymologically based redefinition proposed by the three researchers: dramaturgy deriving from the Greek terms “drama” (action) and “ergon” (work) constitutes, as they suggest, a process of working on actions and therefore touches economic procedures at its core. What does all that have to do with loose hair? Come and find out on June 2.

HENDRIK FOLKERTS AND BOJANA KUNST
TALK ABOUT PERFORMANCE AND EXHIBITION, SCORES AND DOCUMENTA 14
For EDITION 16 of the ATW TALKS, we are delighted to welcome documenta 14 curator Hendrik Folkerts in Gießen. Based in Kassel, Hendrik contributes to the exhibition based on his expertise on art practices from Central and Southeast Asia and the Pacific region as well as his longstanding interest in performance, particularly the concept of the score and its capacity to interweave different practices. In a recent article he posited that the score is the element which trans-acts between visual language, enactment, the body, the space, yet it is also something that can be read to enact in a variety of ways. Along these lines, Hendrik and ATW professor Bojana Kunst will debate the particular present relation of performance and visual arts:
How to think about the role of the exhibition in the (re-)enactment of the score and how does the score influence the concept of the exhibition? How does performance re-appear in the scope of documenta? Does the interest in the score correspond to the concept of organising documenta in two cities, that is in Kassel and Athens? Before Hendrik joined the documenta team, he worked at Stedelijk museum in Amsterdam for five years, curating the performance, film and discursive programs. In October 2017, he will start as Dittmer Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago.

KATE MCINTOSH AND MARTINA RUHSAM
TALK ABOUT NON-HUMAN BODIES, AUDIENCE INVOLVEMENT
AND SELF-ORGANISED PRODUCTION
Whether the audience members are dismantling and reconstructing objects, whether they are pulling strings in order to make a sonorous stage set appear or whether they are touching things and materials that are then passed on from hand to hand: in several recent works, Kate McIntosh is curious about the audience-members themselves that she attempts to bodily involve into her performances. Since 2004, the Brussels based choreographer has developed a multifaceted corpus of performance-works for the stage and other spaces, all of them being driven by an interest in the body: be it human, non-human, in movement or involved in an experimental apparatus.
The affiliation of the individual and the communal is another crucial point in Kate's work, both on the level of performance and audience reception as well as on the level of production: together with a group of artists and art-workers she founded the structure SPIN, an artist-run support and research platform in Brussels.
Be welcome to EDITION NO. 17 of the ATW TALKS in which Kate and member of staff Martina Ruhsam will talk about practices of involvement and the crux with participation, the role that non-human bodies play in the works, and working processes of Kate and the nexus of autonomy and community – in the self-organised platform SPIN and beyond.

SILVIA BOTTIROLI AND ROSE BEERMANN
TALK ABOUT
THE SINGULARITY OF A FESTIVAL TODAY
What can a festival do? What is the function of a festival in our present situation? This edition of the ATW TALKS takes place in the frame of Diskurs, a festival curated by ATW students which is organised from October 11-15 this year. On the occasion of Diskurs festival, we welcome Silvia Bottiroli for a discussion about her experiences as the former artistic director of the Italian Santarcangelo festival (2012-2016) and about her view on festivals as a theatre scholar and professor at Bocconi University in Milan.
In a time when avant-garde festivals celebrate decades of their existence (steirischer herbst was 50 this year, Kunstenfestivaldesarts looks back at more than 20 years), in a time when the temporal economy of festivals is not the exception but the rule (the 'festivalisation' of the programmes of regular theatre venues being one sign of this development), in a time when artists are more and more disappointed with European conditions of funding and production both in theatres and festivals—what can the singularity and the potential of a festival be? The talk will be hosted by ATW member of staff Rose Beermann.

VLADIMIR MILLER AND MIRIAM DREYSSE
TALK ABOUT
"SETTLEMENTS", ARTISTIC PRACTICE, AND COLLABORATION
SETTLEMENTS is the name of a series of open workspaces that Vladimir Miller has been developing over the course of several years, as of late within the framework of his teaching position at a.pass in Brussels, where he recently organised the eleventh edition of the series. Currently, the performance maker, scenographer and video artist is preparing SETTLEMENT 12 which will start in Giessen on January 8 and take place at the ATW. In his function as a guest professor of the ATW, he will work with our students to facilitate a three weeks working period based on key principles such as “encountering processes”, “no spectators”, “gifts”, and “productive instability”.
Reason enough to invite Vladimir for a talk about the project, but also about his more general interest in collaboration. In the past, Vladimir has been working with artists such as Meg Stuart and Philipp Gehmacher, and a residency at Akademie Schloss Solitude in 2015 led him to investigating how “our politics and ideologies of togetherness and collaboration manifest themselves in our spaces of (artistic) practice.” This and other elementary questions of artistic practice will be addressed in a talk hosted by ATW professor Miriam Dreysse.

BEAT BOX
Ole Hübner: »Mehrfachbelichtete Melodramen« – »Multi-Exposed Melodramas« (2016/17, WP) – Listening theatre for beatboxing voice artist, audio/video playback, and live electronics
... and compositions by Ondrej Adámek (UA), Gordon Kampe (UA), Erin Gee (UA), Kurt Schwitters, and Georges Aperghis
In the solo project of voice artist Frauke Aulbert beatboxing, the »5th element of hip-hop«, meets contemporary music. Here, in musical and socio-cultural regards, two worlds which both fanatically create art on the fringe of society, and still could not be more different, crash into each other. On three performative layers – vocal artistry, video/light design, and audio electronics – the rhythmical language of beatboxing is translated to neo-avant-garde sonic art.
In »Mehrfachbelichtete Melodramen« by Ole Hübner the – vocally, noisily, percussively – self-expressing subject finds herself in an imaginary scenery of communication and everyday sound. Imitation, addition, manipulation, and not least performative virtuosity are the media to invite the audience to adopt the memory of scenes which have been experienced individually, and to match them with their own experiences and imaginations – to multi-expose them.

Killed all the squid things in the bottom to see if I can grab some humanities...
But theres two in the back that struck me oddly, I walked up.... And they’re crying
I feel bad :( anyone know why theyre crying? Seems so bizarre... Poor lil guys
CASCADE is a hideout place on stage - a greenhouse for a dance that’s moving around ever so slowly without going anywhere in particular. It’s like a plant that’s using our perception for photosynthesis. The images are constantly growing and decaying in front of us but nothing ever really changes in this choreographic arboretum unless we want it to. If we look long enough things will get blurry or maybe the light is just fading out (again). In this choreography is turning into a camouflage, exploiting the vulnerability of our visual perception and at the same time uncovering something else that we didn’t see before.

Collective Teatime#2: Decolonizing Performance
A group of PoC (persons of color) artists accepts an invitation for the collective use of a dance studio space for one week. It is a starting point for collaborations, conversations, and exchanging practices as they respond to the current conditions of producing dance and performance in Berlin. On Thursday, the space opens for the audience to engage and join our on- going dialogue in the format of a salon. Here, we will host Black in Berlin as our special guest. On Sunday is a public showing of our artistic work and practices.

In this choreography, objects are the main characters, as well as the camera that looks at them.
The tools of a workshop start dancing. Or the camera dances around them. They move to their own sounds and the music that arises from them. The sound triggers motion and the motion triggers sounds until everything becomes one.

APPROPRIATION.PARASITEN.KRAPP'S LAST TAPE. (AT)
The production Appropriation. Parasiten. Krapp´s last tape (working title) uses a media-oriented approach to explore the possibilities and limits of the reconstruction of an existing staging: The production by Samuel Beckett of his own piece Krapp’s last tape in 1969.
The reconstruction confronts the body with its limits: To what extent is it possible to appropriate the singular body language of someone else, in this case that of the actor Martin Held who played the protagonist Krapp in 1969? Wouldn’t the process of appropriation change the one who appropriates and that which is appropriated?
Isn’t there an inherent danger of being infected, of losing control, of an amorphisation? What can be perceived from this process by someone who is watching?
Beckett’s text (also) focuses on how perception is unsettled: Krapp’s last tape begins with the stage direction “A late evening in the future“ – calling forth a certain atmosphere that is immediately irritated by the paradoxical reference to the future.
concept and direction: Sebastian Blasius
concept and dramaturgical advice: Daniel Franz
performance: Ludger Lamers
sound: Björn Deigner/Luise Voigt
light: Katharina Runte
production management and dramaturgical advice: Anke Euler
Appropriation. Parasiten. Krapp´s Last Tape has been produced to obtain the degree of diploma and is kindly supported by Hessische Theaterakademie (HTA), the Institut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft, ZMI of Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, Kulturamt Gießen, Kulturreferat München and is a co-production with i-camp/neues theater münchen.

Cinematic modes of choreography - notes on the spaces and intervals
Plato’s cave is a comfortable and a disturbing place at the same time. The comfort of the projection, which is both fiction and imagination, stays always dark. The one who talks about the world outside the cave endangers the comfort within the cave. But what if - following Diderot - the one who left the cave would not report what he had seen but just be silent on his return? According to Goran Sergej Pristaš Diderot considers this possibility. In his "notes on the spaces and intervals" Pristaš enquires the prerequisites of Diderot’s cinematic viewing. Slavoj Zizek would take much pleasure in this and – maybe dancing - present his own analysis in the faked stage. Besides one really wonders what the cinemating viewing can see – epecially on a stage. We are looking forward to a stimulated discussion.
Goran Sergej Pristaš can be unhesitatingly called an authority within the European dance, theatre and performance scene. He has been professor at the “Academy of Drama and Art” at the University of Zagreb since 1993. Before that he worked as director, dramatic advisor and performer with the performance collective BADco (among others) and was the artistic director of the theatre ŠKUC in Ljubljana. Till 1999 he also worked as producer and dramatic advisor of the company of Borut Separovic and produced the performance “Confession”. Since 2000 he has been the director of the “Centre of Drama Art” in Zagreb. Till 2007 he was the editor in chief of the theatre and performance magazine “Frakcija” which he had founded in 1996. Since 2003 he has been one of the initiators of "Zagreb - Cultural Kapital of Europe 3000" ("ZCK 3000") which is a series of regional and international projects dealing with new group dynamics, collective strategies and working methods for the cultural production. He and Ivana Ivković will conduct a workshop themed "Stratagames: A Theatre of Operations" at the Steirischer Herbst 2009.

Angriff auf Bodega Bay
"...the bird attacks have subsided for the time being. Bodega Bay seems to be the center though there are reports of minor attacks on Sebastopol and a few on Santa Rosa. Bodega Bay has been courtened off by road blocks. Most of the town's people have managed to get out though there are still some isolated pockets of people. No decision has been arrived at yet as to what the next step will be, but there has been some discussion as to whether the military should go in. It appears that the bird attacks come in waves with long intervals between. The reason for this does not seem clear as yet."

Cold Lights
The audio-visual Installation Cold Lights confronts the accuracy of the natural scientific view on the observed object with the "long winded" perception of an art piece. On the one hand the spectator has to come very close to the exhibited organic object to analyze all the details and to see all texts and images projected on the surface of the display right before it, on the other hand he can let his eyes wander around the room in some kind of "holistic" perception. Especially the sound connects all the exhibits to one complex "organic" object. The spectator is challenged to reflect on his perception in and of natural science as being exact and art as dealing with fictions and virtuality. In that way the installation also reflects on the utilization on imaging technology in exact sciences.

Breathing City
Breathing City is a video and sound installation comprising of 4 TV screens and surround sound system. The video screens display an 8 minute cycle depicting urban surroundings, captured by computer controlled robotic cameras, accompanied by a musical composition for 4 breathing voices edited for surround sound. The multitude of elements produces a contrast of unity and multiplicity: the 4 voices unite into a single enfolding sound; the four screens show a single object in different moments in time and from different perspectives, so that the singular disintegrates into a multiplicity. However, the manipulation is performed in temporal succession avoiding repetitiveness. The robotic camera movement contrasts with the human motion, opposing the animate with the inanimate, the city life and the living city.

DER MAJOR ZURÜCK AUS INDIEN
The whole evening ist a disturbing signal, with really sensational effects, stirring up facts we don´t want to know about ourselves. We cast a spell over you and take you with us to the most interesting journey ever: Come and meet Boris Vian, one of the most touching and extraordinary french writer, who´s texts fill up your mind with a tremendous amount of senses of pleasure.Boris Vian came in many forms… Jazzologist, Engineer, Hard Boiled Translator, Soft Boiled Surrealist, Linguist, Singer, Trumpeter, Prisoner, Columnist, Novelist, Artist ... He lived fast and left a beautiful corpse d'esprit.Boris Vian celebrated his extraordinary imagination and astonishing facility with language with a disorganised career of writing, playing music, fixing old cars, throwing and attending parties and attacking any form of pretention or bureacracy.
Help yourself! Read Boris Vian! You´re welcome! Vive la pataphysique!

Der Mann mit dem Tornister
The audience perceives the songs of the last century on the proscenium stage within the greatest possible distance of the uppermost and very back theatre balcony. Great emphasis lies on the production of images, that have their full effect only from the birds perspective. The embedment in a sourround-environment intensifies the theatrical play of closeness and distance.

Kratzer und Unschärfen.||||||||||||||
Symposium october 27th - 29th 2006, Gießen||||||||||
Scratches and blur.||||||||
|||||||||||approach towards an aesthetic of the imperfect.
The scratch unites wound and tool - ice-scraper and abrasion are methods of revealing the surface. This is marked as such, opens itself while staying undissolved.
The blur names units of space and time that negate and maintain the surface at the same time. In its scattered nature, the blur refers to the plane surface, endangers the matter and, in its vagueness, also protects it. The blur creates measurement just as the measurement creates blur.
Scratches and blur are not limited by the medium - as a scratch in space, a blur in narration, a scratch in time and a blur in perspective, they suspend conventional relationships and allow for new conditions. Their effect is immediate. The gap and permeability of the artworks surface becomes intended provoked, it occurs through scratches - the questioning of the surface emphasises its performativity.||||||||||||||||||||
The work of art can be experienced through scratches and blur, through cords in films, the noise and crackling in recordings or through cracks and fissures in pictures.
How deep must a scratch be to be perceptible? How deep does it have it be to attack the identity, but not integrity, of an artwork? How many scratches can an artwork take? Do they enable authenticity, or do they brand its creation? What are the modes of operation, under what conditions do caesura and fractures appear? Can errors be directed, or is any production of mistakes a strategy to keep them at bay? Does the increased establishment of strategies of the incomplete stand for the decline of systematic utopia, or are new ideals for a post-sovereign ability to act able to emerge?||||||||||||||||||||||
exkurs->d i s k u r s 0 7 is a preceding symposium to the d i s k u r s 0 7 that is dedicated towards the questions surrounding scratches and blur. Doctorates, students and young artists out of a variety of fields will investigate these terms through lectures and artistic work. The approach towards scratches and blur should be carried out interdisciplinary in the reflection of various media and socio-cultural phenomena, by focusing on various (unfocused) details in order to attempt a preparation for an aesthetic of the imperfect. The examining of the artistic and academic work process is of importance, especially in its relationship between theory and practice. exkurs-> sees itself as a network of young artists as well as academic newcomers. We aspire towards a continuing discussion with regards to d i s k u r s 0 7.|||||||||||||||||||||||||

Il a séjourné à Rome (Académie de France), à Florence (Villa I Tatti-Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies), à Londres (Institute of Advanced Study, Warburg Institute).
all kinds of song
property German history in a tape, from the beginnings till this day
place: a very old, empty jewellery in the city centre of Giessen.
Moorbach is the name of a very little town
Aim: to surch for an audience that is normally not in the theater through putting the stage in the city centre where everybody passes and through take actors and musicians from the town
Situation: the spectators stand on the street, by the shop-windows and the glass door is pursued the events. The piece slowly develops, light and tone and picture set up and develop. E.G., the blower's quartet that plays outdoors, goes in. Light in the background. Dumb play. In the end will transfer from inside to outdoors the tone of a cloth that above the table glides, the tones arise until the actors speak in the end outdoors live. Increasingly the piece opens to the spectator until he is asked in the end to enter and it ends in a dance together with the spactators.
