How my life turned into a festival

“Tireless discussions and cheerful get-togethers far into the night” – that is what the Diskurs team of 2004 remember if asked about “Rok”. At that time Rok Vevar visited Gießen for the first time as a participant in DISKURS “Hope” – the resurrection Diskurs. He explored Gießen with other members of the “WORK IN” laboratory and presented his performance “A Fistful of Empty Hands” which he co-directed with Simona Semenič. In 2005 he and Simona Semenič developed the performance “A Cartography of the Feature-Length Slide Show" in which they artistically deal with their impressions, question and contacts from Gießen. For the 25th Diskurs Rok Vevar returns to Gießen. His lecture performance "How my life turned into a festival" is supposed to be "a relentlessly honest revision of my own position in a frame of an international festival networking". We are curious about his critical position – especially given his memberships in the selection committees of various festivals – and are glad to welcome this profound expert of West and East European performance art.

Rok Vevar studied comparative literature at he University of Ljubljana and attended the "Theatre and Puppetry School - Cosmopolitan Factory of Arts". Subsequently he pursued “Theatre Directing Studies” at the "Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film und TV". He worked for a dozen magazines, catalogues and programmes as author, critic and publicist. From 1999 to 2006 his was co-editor of the theatre magazine “Maska”. As a director and dramatic advisor he has collaborated on various dance and theatre performances such as "A fistful of empty hands" (2001), "Solo No Peak" (2003), "Cartography of a feature-length slide show" (2005) with Simona Semenič as well as "Thinking without banisters" und "Meeting" (both 2006). In addition to various lectureships (e.g. at the University of Nova Gorica and the "Raszewski Theatre Institut" in Warsaw) he is currently researching an community project on "Autonomy and complexity: Research methodologies in contemporary dance". He is member of the artistic board of the dance festival "Gibanica - Moving Cake" in Ljubljana and works as a consultant for the Slovenian Ministry of Culture.
