—THE WHITE HOLE AND OTHER STORIES. ALEPPO, A PLATTFORM FOR THE ARTISTIC AND THEORETICAL ENGAGEMENT WITH PERFORMANCE AND POLITICS—

Aleppo is not only the name of a city in Northern Syria, but also that of an independent, Brussels-based performing arts project founded by researcher and curator Daniel Blanga Gubbay. Every season, Aleppo opens a free and public program of artistic interventions, performances, lectures, screenings, and reading groups emerging from a specific question with political relevance. This particular format was inspired by the science-fiction astronomic model of the “white hole,” which, similar to the black hole, denotes a fracture of space, but as opposed to the black hole, the white hole releases energy in a continuous manner instead of absorbing it. The white hole unleashes a stream of unsolved questions from a specific point, around which a series of people might gather.

Starting from this conceptual framework of Aleppo, Daniel Blanga Gubbay will discuss the various activities of Aleppo as well as questions about the institution, the notions of dependency, and time. What are the institutional and temporal preconditions for coming together in order to engage, metaphorically speaking, in the production of white holes? The conversation will be chaired by ATW professor Bojana Kunst.
