Markus holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Göttingen and a M.A. form the Latin-American Faculty for Social Science in Quito, Ecuador. After working as a research assistant, he entered the public sector as an advisor for the National Secretary for Planning and Development and as head of the departments for Statistics Production and Investigation at the National Statistics Office in Ecuador. In his doctoral studies at the University of Siegen he is focusing on the relationship between inequality and carbon emission on the micro level.
