Areas of focus
- Nutrient cycles in soils of agroforestry systems
- Interaction between trees and annual crops
- Food forests and forest gardens
Project
- Agroforestry for sustainable multifunctional agriculture (FORMULA)
FORMULA investigates agroforestry systems and their contributions to nature for people (Nature's Contributions to People - NCP). The aim is to identify management options that optimize synergies and mitigate potential trade-offs arising from the integration of forestry elements into cropland.
The project will investigate the supply and demand of NCP in two agroforestry systems at Gladbacherhof in Hesse and at the site of Großmutz in Brandenburg (Germany) with different production systems (organic vs. conventional) and environmental conditions.
The tree rows create spatial gradients of environmental factors towards the field and form the basis for two primary research objectives: the assessment of the performance of silvoarable agroforestry systems and their comparison with treeless agricultural reference systems, as well as the improvement of the mechanistic understanding of the processes underlying the spatial patterns of regulating and provisioning NCPs.
FORMULA is a joint research initiative of the JLU Giessen and the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) in cooperation with the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE).
