Chair of Laboratory Animal Science and Animal Welfare

Animal welfare concerns us all!
The Chair of Laboratory Animal Science and Animal Welfare represents the disciplines of laboratory animal science, animal welfare, and ethology in research and teaching. In veterinary education and later professional practice, veterinarians have a particular obligation to animal welfare. The Code of Ethics for Veterinarians (Codex Veterinarius, TVT) states:
Veterinarians, in addition to their diverse public responsibilities, should use their professional expertise and, in fulfilling the expert role assigned to them under the Animal Welfare Act, work in particular to raise the general standard of animal welfare for all animals under human care and to continuously improve the health and well-being of animals.
The teaching concepts and content of the Chair of Laboratory Animal Science and Animal Welfare are aligned with fulfilling these special veterinary responsibilities. Veterinary medicine cannot be viewed independently of societal developments. For this reason, the Chair works in a targeted interdisciplinary manner with representatives from sociology, law, agricultural sciences, biology, social sciences, the arts, and philosophy. This ensures that the field of human–animal relationships is considered holistically and made applicable to veterinary medicine as well as to animal welfare and the 3R principles.
