From a slogan promising innovation, over the past decades ‘interdisciplinarity’ has turned into a requirement, expectation, and simply the invisible reality of academic research and teaching. To participate in research consortia or to teach (inter)faculty courses one needs a broad set of skills accommodating different disciplines and ‘translating’ between diverse academic cultures. All this is further complicated by the rising use of AI. What does this situation mean for academics trained in the humanities and culture-focused social sciences? What can we give up and what should we retain and hone? In this workshop we’ll discuss the challenges and rewards of working across disciplinary boundaries and national contexts in an academic world that is disciplinarily structured yet demands mobility and porosity.
