This workshop will examine Foucault’s ideas about the body and power relations, focusing on how institutions discipline and regulate the body through power relations.
The aim is to provide an overview of how the body has been studied historically, define Foucault’s vision, and assess how it diverges from previous approaches.
Finally, we will explore its influence on contemporary scholarship. This will enable us to reflect on how the body can be understood in terms of experience, identity, gender, power, and embodiment. The workshop will demonstrate how the body has developed into its own subject of study.
At the beginning of the workshop the participants will be asked to discuss how the body has been studied historically, including in ancient Greece, the Middle Ages, or at the XX century, when the anthropology consolidates as a discipline itself. Participants will then be asked to arrange cards containing concepts and authors on a timeline. After that, some quotes, mostly from Foucault’s Discipline and Punishment: “The Birth of the Prison” (1977), and The History of Sexuality, Volume I: An Introduction (1978), regarding the concepts of the body, and power relations will be examined. Finally, the participants will work on teams to summarize the influence of Foucault’s ideas on the study of the body in relation to identity, gender, experience, and so on.
