What is Critical Masculinities Studies, and why should we talk about it now?
As conversations around gender, sexuality, race, violence, and care continue to shape our public life, critically examining masculinities has become increasingly important.
But what does it mean to think about masculinities critically?
This workshop offers an introduction to new concepts, debates, and emerging directions in the study of masculinities in the twenty-first century. Drawing on Đỗ Thảo Nhi's own research, alongside recent work by scholars such as David L. Eng and K. Allison Hammer, the workshop combines interactive activities and guided discussion to explore how we can engage with masculinities in today's social, political, and cultural
contexts.
Together, we will ask: Why do we speak of masculinities in the plural now? How do masculinities intersect with power, femininities, sexuality, race, violence, and care? Are we witnessing a "crisis of masculinity" now? How can Critical Masculinities Studies help us read literature, media, and other cultural products from fresh perspectives? And how might it open up new conversations in Gender and Sexuality studies, as well as
Cultural studies more broadly?
This workshop is designed primarily for researchers interested in Gender and Sexualities Studies, but it also warmly welcomes university students and anyone curious about the field. While some familiarity with Gender and Sexualities Studies may facilitate participation, no prior knowledge is required.
