Podcasts have been one of the fastest growing media formats and are now an integral part of the media landscape. Increasingly, podcasts are not only used as a form of entertainment, but also as a medium for serious science communication. As such, producing podcasts might become an essential, yet easily accessible skill in the toolkit of researchers. This course series is intended as a hands-on introduction to the basics of podcasting for academic purposes and beyond.
 
Topics covered in this three-part practical course are:
 
  • Characteristics and affordances of podcasts
  • Equipment and software needed for podcasting
  • Recording and editing your own podcast episodes
 
In preparation, please bring some notes on your personal favorite podcasts and what makes them ‘good,’ as well as preliminary ideas for a podcast episode that you would want to record in the practical section of the course.
 
// Robin Schmieder is a doctoral researcher at the GCSC and IPP. His research interests center around the narratological dimensions of vlogs and extend towards other disciplines and platforms within internet research. In his position as videographer for the GCSC YouTube channel, he combines his research on social media with his experience in audio and video production.
