Schematic description of a bioconcentration study with associated analysis
The schematic description of a bioconcentration study (BCF-Test) shows the comparison of two analytical methods for the extraction of hydrophobic organic chemicals from the water phase (Cw) in the presence of organic matter (brown particles) in the test system. Compared to the conventional, solvent based extraction of total concentrations (Ctotal) (here liquid-liquid-extraction, LLE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME) allows the parallel determination of total and freely dissolved / bioavailable (Cfree) test substance concentrations.
Results from the use of SPME in bioconcentration studies were included in an OECD Guidance Document corresponding to the OECD Test Guideline 305 on bioaccumulation in fish.
The subject was specified in the PhD thesis of Leonard Böhm, who was awarded the Young Scientist Award by the SETAC-GLB and the dissertation award of the Justus Liebig University Giessen.
