Protein crystal of Plasmodium falciparum pyruvate kinase
In 2018, according to WHO, 219 million people worldwide suffered from Malaria. One of the five human pathogen species is the parasite Plasmodium falciparum, which we analyse in our laboratory. Besides cell culture and various molecular biological methods, we further characterize the parasites at a protein biochemical level. To this end we use protein crystallization followed by X-ray diffraction analysis to solve three-dimensional structures and possibly identify new drug targets.
