Studying Materials Science

Studium-Unterseite

Materials science has accompanied mankind since the beginning. Stone age – what is the best rock for a hand axe? Copper age, bronze age, iron age, and silicon age are named after materials. Those names stand for the mastering of these materials, their production, processing, and the corresponding knowledge. Following this tradition, materials science has been successful for a long time, but definitely is not old fashioned. Nothing has changed regarding the core task, “to master materials for the benefit of mankind”. In the course of time, the scope has become more complex and the variety of possibilities has increased –creative and resourceful human beings are needed more than ever before to further advance materials science.

Our modern study program of materials science at Justus Liebig University is a science-oriented BSc/MSc program with a strong focus on advanced functional materials. It is designed as an interdisciplinary course program between chemistry and physics and firmly integrated into the current materials research in Giessen. Theoretical as well as in the practical elements help you to gain the knowledge necessary for developing materials for future applications and for personally progressing in a professional framework.

The theoretical understanding of the interplay between materials’ properties on different length scales – from the nanoscale via the microscale up to the macroscale, twinned with the knowledge about state-of-the-art characterization methods like electron microscopy or optical spectroscopy – are the core of the practical education.

If you are keen on changing the world, curious, and like to have a crack at things, if you like chemistry and physics and are not afraid of mathematics, then materials science will be yours. And if you are unsure about your abilities because you believe that you might have some difficulties in one of these fields, then do not hesitate to contact us. We surely can give you some advice.
