Excellence Initiative and Excellence Strategy

Excellence on solid foundations

Excellence on solid foundations: with about €100m p.a. in third-party funding, research funding and other income, Justus Liebig University Giessen is a research-intensive university with a long tradition. The second largest university in Hessen receives funding from numerous joint research programs, including eleven collaborative research centers and several priority programs and research groups. Represented in the Excellence Initiative continuously for over ten years, JLU is now the most successful Hessian university in the Federal and State Excellence Strategy, having received a grant for the Heart & Lung Excellence cluster Cardiopulmonary Institute (CPI)—together with Goethe University Frankfurt and the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim—and with its participation in the cluster Energy Storage beyond Lithium. New Concepts for a Sustainable Future of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the University of Ulm.

Top Research

Since the beginning of the Excellence Initiative in 2006, the University of Giessen has been on the Excellence map of Germany. The Excellence Cluster Cardiopulmonary System (ECCPS), the precursor to CPI, and the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) received funding from the start, in both rounds of the federal & state initiative. As a comprehensive university with many facets, JLU has at the same time created optimum conditions for developing further areas of excellence—such as in perception psychology, the field of material and energy, and in the cultural science of security research with a focus on Eastern Europe.
