Pulmonary Research
From ECCPS to CPI – expanding research excellence in Giessen
Giessen has been at the top of international pulmonary research for many years. The very first program phase of the federal-state Excellence Initiative included funding for the Excellence Cluster Cardiopulmonary System (ECCPS) at JLU in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim and the University of Frankfurt.
Since then, more centers have contributed to pulmonary research. Alongside the LOEWE Center UGMLC (Universities of Giessen and Marburg Lung Center), JLU heads the German Center for Lung Research (DZL). The Campus Area Seltersberg/Medicine, now extended to Aulweg, is emblematic of this, with new JLU facilities being built over the last few years. Another new complex under construction on the campus is the Center for Infection and Genomics of the Lung (CIGL).
As testimony to just some of the achievements made in pulmonary research at Giessen, the German Federal President awarded the Future Prize to Prof. Dr. Ardeschir Ghofrani.
After over ten years’ experience in the Cluster, the partners from Giessen, Bad Nauheim and Frankfurt would like to go a step further with their current proposal. The proposed Excellence Cluster Cardiopulmonary Institute (CPI) will follow new paths structurally and programmatically with the vision that “precision biology is the driving force behind precision medicine.”
