PhDs
Doctoral candidates at JLU benefit from pre-doctoral programs, graduate centers, workshops, training, and internal funding opportunities.
The doctorate is of particular importance as an entry into an academic career. The Justus Liebig University Giessen offers a variety of doctoral opportunities with different degrees of self-organization within its broad range of subjects, from individual doctorates to structured programmes in colleges and (international) graduate centers.

Doctorate funding
Doctoral students generally have four funding options at their disposal:

-
position as a research assistant
-
Position in a third-party funded project
-
Position in an (international) research training group
You can find an overview of external graduate and doctoral scholarships here:
(German) Download Fördermöglichkeiten für Graduierte und Promovierte
Scholarships usually consist of a fixed monthly funding amount as well as an additional lump sum for travel and material costs and possibly other supplements (e.g. for childcare). It should be noted that a scholarship is not an employment contract and therefore the employer's contributions to health and social insurance do not apply.
The DFG Research Training Groups associated with JLU and the GCSC also award doctoral scholarships, which enable dissertations in the respective specific subject or research area. Positions for research assistants at JLU are advertised publicly and can be found under job vacancies. An overview of positions in externally funded projects can also be found on the websites of the funding bodies, e.g. on the DFG website.
Once a year, JLU awards graduate scholarships to excellent young researchers from all faculties. The prerequisite for this is an outstanding study or examination performance as well as the support of a supervising university lecturer. The Office for Equal Opportunities offers funding for doctoral degrees to compensate for pregnancy, maternity or parental leave, care of children or dependents.
Further training opportunities for doctoral candidates
Doctoral students also have access to the services of Human Resources Development(including events in the continuing education and training program), Career Services and the University Didactics Competence Center for advice and personal and professional development.
