About Us

With our eight professorships and ca. 25 academic as well as non-academic staff members, the Department of Political Sciences at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) belongs to the major ones of its kind in Germany. While we are able to cover the entire range of Political Science, we focus on the fields of Political Theory and History of Thought, Gender Studies, Democracy and Democratization Studies, Politics and Economics in a Multi-Level Governance System, Germany’s Political and Social System / Comparing Political Systems, International Relations, International Integration focusing on Eastern Europe and the Methodology of Political Science. This wide range of research topics allows for a productive discussion and exchange between researchers, lecturers, and students concerning a multitude of prevailing political issues and topics of research.

Research at our department is conducted by our professors and research assistants who are working for individual as well as numerous external founded projects. Further, International Research Partnerships as well as internal cooperation are additional central pillars of our work. Moreover, all members of our department maintain close collaboration ties with a multitude of international partners through many research projects and clusters. Thereby, many possibilities regarding personnel and student exchanges emerged. Our internal networking takes place within a large number of research sections as well as study centers. 

Concerning the area of teaching, the Department of Political Science offers a subject-specific education for future teachers as well as for a diverse range of Bachelor and Master degree courses. For the respective Bachelor of Arts Social Sciences, we closely collaborate with the Department of Sociology. The Master of Arts Democracy and Governance is solely taking place at the Department of Political Sciences and interlinks Democracy and Governance in the context of the multi-level system. Concerning international exchange, we maintain close partnerships with 31 universities in 15 EU member states as well as with further universities in Colombia, Norway and Turkey (ERASMUS+ and ISAP-Programs). Thereby, students have various possibilities for studying abroad. Moreover, members of the department engage in mutual partnerships between JLU and faculties in Japan, South Africa and Taiwan. The Student Association of the Social Sciences provides opportunities to engage in departmental decision making as well as in other political, cultural and social issues.
