W2 Professorship in Political Science

with a focus on Gender Studies

as of now.

Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.

Duties:

The possible working scope of your activities may include issues such as social, health, care-work and/or political education policy themes, “traditional” women and men’s studies, topics such as intersectionality, postcolonialism, queer studies as well as motifs of diversity and anti-discrimination research alongside the focus on political theories of gender studies. Your contributions should include theoretical and/or empirical examinations on issues of power, participation, and inequality, related to political governance and policy analyse, linked to perspectives on analysing gender.

The fields of gender studies should be linked to other subdisciplines at the Department of Political Science at the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), including political theory, international relations, European studies, comparative politics and societies, political economy, democracy and participation research as well as political attitudes and socialization research.

We expect a readiness to cooperate with other research centres at the JLU. In particular, these interdisciplinary research collaborations would include working with the Centre for Media and Interactivity (ZMI) and the Centre for International Development and Environment Research (ZEU). In the area of interdisciplinary young researcher development, we would also expect substantial contribution to the work of the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) and the Giessen Graduate Centre for Social Sciences, Business, Economics, and Law (GGS). Moreover, this professorship is involved in conceptualizing Gender Studies at the JLU, based on pre-existing frameworks at the JLU and the Faculty of Social Science and Cultural Studies.

The position also entails teaching responsibilities within the study programmes of the Department of Political Science. These include the BA programme “Social Sciences”, the MA programme “Democracy and Governance”, the minor subjects “Political Sciences” in the BA and MA study programmes in “History and Cultural Sciences” as well as other BA and MA programmes. Further, instruction also includes courses in the subjects of “Politics and Economics” within the teacher training programmes L2 with L5 and L3, and the basic subject “Political Sciences” in all teacher training programmes. An active participation in academic self-governance is also expected.

Requirements:

In addition to a relevant doctorate and additional relevant academic achievements (e.g. habilitation), a broad experience in political science topics of gender research is required. An anchoring in empirical-analytical and/or theoretical topics of gender research is desirable.

Publications in relevant national and international journals are required, together with an international network of one's own research activities. In addition, experience and success in the acquisition of external funding should be proven.

Willingness to teach in English is desired. Applicants should have an internationally relevant profile and cooperation experience. Proven relevant didactic experiences and concepts are required.

In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.

JLU aims to employ more women in academic research. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. JLU also pursues the goal at faculty leadership level of increased competence in dealing with gender and family-related issues. JLU is regarded as a family-friendly university. Applicants with children are very welcome. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.

We strongly recommend candidates to refer to our fact sheet on application procedures.

Please send your application with the required documents via online form to the President of Justus Liebig University Giessen by July 14th, 2022, quoting the reference number 3-05/22.
