Information about Political Science as a Minor Subject
At our department Political Science is offered as a minor subject in the following combinations:
  • Political Science as a big Bachelor of Arts minor (40 credits)
  • Political Science as a small Bachelor of Arts minor (30 credits or 6 credits, see course structure for more information)
  • Political Science as a big Master of Arts minor (40 Credits)

Subject Area

Political Science as a Bachelor of Arts minor:
Within the Bachelor of Arts minor the Department of Political Science imparts fundamental knowledge of the field and covers all professorships and research areas within the department. Especially in the electoral modules, questions concerning societal and political change, social inequality, gender relations and the role of the media in political communication are discussed. Besides this, students are encouraged to discuss and debate as well as politically participate themselves.

Political Science as a Master of Arts minor:
Within the curricula of the Democrcay and Governance program, we focus on an intense analysis of the theory and empirical evidence of modern democracies, on the chances and challenges that are connected to political participation, on international cooperation and on the processes of global governance on the state, economic and societal level. Further, the Master of Arts imparts knowledge about empirical social research that qualifies the students for a future profession. A special focus lies on research results in the discussion of current research debates and results in class. Further, we emphasize student’s development of their own research projects. The degree course also gives an insight into professions within the interface of politics, economics and society and international organizations.

Course Structure

For every study combination mentioned above there is a specific program schedule including specific module descriptions. These documents also cover information for students who are interest to combine Political Science and Socielogy as two distinct minors within their studies.

The big Bachelor of Arts minor with 40 (ECTS) credits is designed to be completed within 6 semesters. Three modules are mandatory (M1: Introduction to Political Science, M2: Political Theory and M3: Political Economy / International Relations), the classes within these modules can be selected individually.

The first option of the small Bachelor of Arts minor consist of 30 credits (ECTS) and three mandatory modules (M1: Introduction to Political Science, M2: Political Theory and M3: Political Economy / International Relations), the classes within these modules can be selected individually. The second option of the small Bachelor of Arts minor consist of 6 credits (ECTS) and 6 modules. This option shall be attended during the semesters 4, 5 and 6.

The big Master of Arts minor Political Science is designed to be completed within 4 semesters and consists of 40 credits (ECTS). Module 1 (Democracy) und Module 2 (Democratization Processes) are mandatory. From all the other modules, two can be chosen individually.
