A B S A T Z
From the outside, A B S A T Z is a box. It invites you to discover its monolithic architecture. Inside, there is intimate quiet solitude. If you follow the pull of light, you can meet the protagonist from Kafka's story „The Cares of a Housefather", the word O D R A D E K. It scurries through the picture, rustles in the wall, tells its story and demands a turnaround at the end. The whole thing looks senseless enough, but in its own way perfectly finished.

ALICE CHAUCHAT, VALENTINA DESIDERI, AND GEORG DÖCKER
TALK ABOUT THE PRACTICE OF PRACTICE
Roughly since the mid-2000s, French choreographer Alice Chauchat and her Italian colleague Valentina Desideri, along with other practitioners such as Jennifer Lacey or Myriam Lefkowitz, have been engaging in the creation and sharing of performative practices. Being organised in the form of a loose, open network, they have been using the frameworks of workshops, residencies, and similar formats in order to develop a mode of performative exploration that is no longer centred around the idea of performance as in presenting an event to an audience. Instead, their practices aim at the facilitation of an aesthetic, ethical, or socio-political experience based on two or more participants unfolding mostly task-based actions in direct exchange with each other.
Although their approaches are situated at the margins of the contemporary performing arts, they have proven to be influential for a younger generation of graduating students who, these days, equally seem to question the very value and purpose of performance making. In a conversation with ATW member of staff Georg Döcker, Alice and Valentina will discuss the beginnings of their working with practices as well as their opinions on the further potential of practice-based work.
***
Taking place in a monthly interval since the end of 2015, the ATW TALKS are an open format for discussion organised by the ATW, the Institut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft, Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, Germany. The aim of the ATW TALKS is to create a forum for debating contemporary dance, theatre, and performance, thereby contributing to the academic and artistic discourse in the city, in the Hessian performing arts scene and beyond. What is often considered an advantage of the ATW is equally true for the talks: hidden away from a general public with its necessity for self-representation, the context in Gießen offers a unique possibility for intense, extensive, and critical exchange. Each edition of the ATW TALKS is moderated by members of staff working at the institute. Invitations are extended to artists and academics from the performing arts and affiliated disciplines. The talks are generally conducted in English, on certain occasions though, they might be held in German or French.

“MAKING INSTITUTIONS POROUS” : CONDITIONS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ART AND THE ART OF PRODUCING — Since 2013, Alexandra Baudelot, together with her colleagues Dora García and Mathilde Villeneuve, is co-director of Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, an arts centre located in the banlieues of the north of Paris—an industrial workers melting pot and immigration hub. This exceptional place for art and research, projects and theory welcomes, as the team puts it, artistic practices rather than artistic disciplines. And more importantly, at les Labos, art is confronted with what happens outside of the artistic context, relating artistic practice to the neighbourhood and to the people who live in Aubervilliers.
In EDITION NO. 21 of the ATW TALKS, Alexandra Baudelot will discuss les Labos’ approach to the production of art and the art of producing with ATW member of staf Bernhard Siebert. The talk will present the institution in Aubervilliers including some of the artistic projects that have been developed at the location in the last years. Moreover, the discussion will aim for more general questions, touching on the possibilities and limits of site-specifcity, on the expectations of artists, producers, and audiences in this context, and on ideal working and co-working conditions for artistic production.

AND BOJANA KUNST
—THE WHITE HOLE AND OTHER STORIES. ALEPPO, A PLATTFORM FOR THE ARTISTIC AND THEORETICAL ENGAGEMENT WITH PERFORMANCE AND POLITICS—
Aleppo is not only the name of a city in Northern Syria, but also that of an independent, Brussels-based performing arts project founded by researcher and curator Daniel Blanga Gubbay. Every season, Aleppo opens a free and public program of artistic interventions, performances, lectures, screenings, and reading groups emerging from a specific question with political relevance. This particular format was inspired by the science-fiction astronomic model of the “white hole,” which, similar to the black hole, denotes a fracture of space, but as opposed to the black hole, the white hole releases energy in a continuous manner instead of absorbing it. The white hole unleashes a stream of unsolved questions from a specific point, around which a series of people might gather.
Starting from this conceptual framework of Aleppo, Daniel Blanga Gubbay will discuss the various activities of Aleppo as well as questions about the institution, the notions of dependency, and time. What are the institutional and temporal preconditions for coming together in order to engage, metaphorically speaking, in the production of white holes? The conversation will be chaired by ATW professor Bojana Kunst.

Correspondence #1 on the importance of time and place, the territory
A lecture-performance fruit of the collaboration between Li Lorian (Jerusalem) and Marc Villanueva Mir (Barcelona). What starts as a lecture on spatial conceptualization of utopian and dystopian thinking, transforms into a travel through personal archives, political statements, accents, screenshots, bookmarks, subtitles and voice-overs.
Correspondence #1 aims to draw a visual and conceptual journey between Jerusalem, Barcelona and Gießen; a collage of memories, observations and representations of the multiple and complex realities we inhabit and that at the same time inhabit us.
Using the performative power and discourse that both utopia and dystopia nowadays entail, we explore interferences between actual and ideal, politics and literature, reality and fiction, spaces and places, in order to revisit the cities and landscapes we come from and our concerns with them, and to question the role they play in constituting our sense of home and notion of belonging.

Dis/Orientation
"I might as well be in someone elses's burrow, I thought, and its owner is now digging towards me." (F. Kafka: The Burrow)
To every situation we find ourselves in, the quest for orientation is our primary conscious or subconscious response, putting space, time and subjectivity in order. Orientation means to have an overview; to define inside and outside, center and margins, subject and object;to frame situations and anticipate changes; to bear responsibility and make decisions. Only those who orientate themselves can act as sovereign beings, shape their relations to the world and claim ownership. But orientation is fragile, capricious, and deceptive – it can be lost, controversial, or manipulated. All the routines, signposts and technical devices thathelp us to stay on track cannot prevent the existential experience of lost orientation. In fact, disorientation is always part of the orientation game – as orientation means to be above things: to abstract from a situation, impose structures on it and rule out all differing potentials. The loss of orientation, therefore, can also be a regain of connection to the concrete experience of our senses. In this collaborative workshop, we want to stimulate the interplay of orientation and disorientation by aesthetic means: Which positions, perspectives and movements is orientation dependent on – and how could they be shifted, subverted, or blocked? Can dis/orientation open up the viewer's experience to new, unforeseen spaces – and which role does imagination or narration play in that? We want to start from examinations of concrete spatial settings in theater, visual arts and film, as well as from descriptions of im/possible spaces in literature and our own imaginations. Reflecting the fixpoints for dis/orientation they offer and/or eliminate, participants will create and combine different spatialtemporal situations in the LOODS building; students from all disciplines are asked to collaborate and to continue their developments independently for a public presentation in late June.
Gregor Glogowski, Alisa Hecke and Benjamin Hoesch came together at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies in Giessen, Germany where overlapping scientific and artistic reasearch motivated their projectbased work. In their work they combine elements of Performance, SoundArt and spacebased Installation. Their first work FLIMMERSKOTOMtoured in Germany and internationally. Together they curated and organized the DISKURS Festival on Spatial Arts 2015 in Giessen.

El candidato/ Der Kandidat
1969. In the midst of the very singular political situation that followed May 1968, the independent bookshop and publisher L’Impensé Radical, specialised in rare strategy games, opens in Paris (Rue de Médicis 1). One of its particular aims: deploy the strategy games as a model to decipher the mechanisms of political power and practices of domination.
Fity years after the demonstrations and occupations of May 1968, El Candidato recovers one of the board games published by L’Impensé, and invites you to a performative game night for eight players, which is held in a private flat. El Candidato creates a playful situation around a table, in order to think collectively of what “politics” currently may mean, and specially of what “political” actually means.

The performance installation „Folding Affairs“ is an engagement with the process of folding and unfolding, blurring the line between outside and inside. It affects all material: body, plastic, brain, glass, water... It is an intense material research into the visual aspect of „The Fold“, a physical commitment as well as a challenge to a philosophical understanding of the Deleuzian definition of „The Fold“. Here „the world is interpreted as a body of infinite folds and surfaces that twist and
weave through compressed time and space“. The subject is seen in a state of constant becoming aiming towards diversity and it is rather an opening than a closure, open-ended and inexhaustive.
„Folding Affairs“ is presented in the format of an open studio that can be entered any time. It embraces the in-between and continously oscillates between establishing the visual and revealing the intimicy of a work process.

A warm invitation:
From Thin Air
The performance From Thin Air is an invitation for a collective listening to music. 10 visitors gather to have a drink, to have a word or another and to install themselves finally in a setting, which focuses on the experience of hearing. Here, soundbodies and composition coming from two speakers enter into an exchange with the individual experience of hearing, which takes place in a common space of sound. The collective hearing develops thus to be a communication, which realizes as an experience towards a sensitization of a collective listening.

It was decided that the ignorant beings residing in the basement ought not to be ignored. Out of sincere respect for the fish, there will be a performance for them exclusively. But first, they need to be educated about what's going on, and integrated into the festival's culture.
Human visitors are invited to witness this expertly planned expedition. The ultimate goal: To establish communication.

I AM NOT A JOKE (TAKE TWO)
Feminism has never been so hip and trendy! We could see this as a true victory for feminism and still post a “I’m a feminist” selfie real quick. Let’s be honest. This kind of “high gloss feminism” doesn’t cover up the smell of the shit we encounter every day in the form of sexism, racism and every other kind of possible phobia.
Accompanied by a guitar, a synthesizer and drum machine, The Kill Joys sing, scream and perform against daily discriminations and the patriarchy. I Am Not A Joke (Take Two) is an appeal against this shit while simultaneously questioning the consumability of feminism.
The Kill Joys (Olivia Hyunsin Kim, Magda Drozd & Co.) examine intersectional feminist issues within the form of a theatrical concert performance. The collective was founded in 2016 and has screamed about what makes them angry in a do-it-yourself style ever since. Using songs and performative actions that focus on their own experiences with everyday racism as well as within the performing arts, they create a feminism that is relevant for them and their concerns as women, artists and immigrants that is certainly not a “feel good” marketing strategy.

I will not stay here long
She is standing silently and looking at us: A woman in green velvet jumpsuit. Ida Daniel, a student of the department for “Choreography and Performance” is searching in her graduation performance the traces and multiple existences that inhabit this body that is uncanny and familiar at the same time. A body lives in a promising relationship with all those who inhabit it. But what type of body do they enjoy? Maybe a singing and dancing one? Or one that is rather invisible? Or constantly jumping? Or constantly sleeping? Or just one superbody? Or two?
You know that a moment has finished when a new unlived life gets started.
For I will not stay here long Ida Daniel fantasizes bodies of text, sound, light, image and matter that want to expose themselves in stillness and in motion. Bodies that refuse to get settled.

JLP 2043
Comme un long interminable cri. This is what she answered when I asked her how a solo may sound that she would be dancing forever. JLP 2043 - a solo for Julie Laporte. She will be dancing it for the next 25 years. The solo unfolds its force over the duration of this lived time. It isn’t the euphoric intensity of the new, but the still and unexcited joy by gazing at newly discovered aspects of the old. There are rumours of the solo having an impact of cell rejuvenation on the dancer. Apparently, not only on her, but on everybody witnessing her dance it. Yet still, this wouldn’t be all too important. Based on studies of ancient Dao scriptures, JLP 2043 uses strategies of gradual disappearing, negation and affirmative withdrawal. It tells whispers of seizing futurity and how such an attempt will always be contingent. A tale of the relation between choreography and dance, of strategically soft solidarity in times of flexible mobile overstraining and of the love between dancer and choreographer.
As part of the festivities surrounding the beginning of the coming 25 years, two works of related positions are invited into JLP 2043: Hydrocommons by Riikka Tauriainen and Massage Sonore by NoMad Kollektiv

Liebe
Leander Ripchinsky is a performance artist, who works in various constellations and genres. “Liebe” (Love) is based on his personal search for possibilities to both continually work with old loves, as well as artistically pursue new desires and intuitions. So far, Ripchinsky has asked 50 artists to collaborate with him on the “Liebe” collection, each producing a single solo for him. These solos play with different temporalities and intimacies and are meant to be permanently conserved in Ripchinsky’s body, allowing current versions of the performances to be shown over and over again over the years. At Mousonturm, audience has the chance for the first-time to experience individual pieces from the constantly growing collection of stage performances.

Open Guerilla Workstation "ØDIPUS REC."
The young opera collective "The Navidson" gathers at Operadagen 2018 in Rotterdam in order to refine the current production "Ødipus Rec." in an "Open Guerilla Workstation". The publicly accessible platform makes visible and audible what usually takes place in spaces behind the scenes that are safe but also hostile to exchange. "The Navidsons" open up their work meeting to interested visitors, and enter into a dialogue on the metaphorical meaning of blindness, on questions about the formal realization of sound, music and stage, on compositional sketches and dramaturgical ideas of the planned music theatre "Ødipus Rec."
The idea of the "Guerilla Workstation" is an advancement of thoughts on "communing" and "co-creation" from the production "The Navidson Records" (premiere: Münchener Biennale 2016). In the context of the festival, this action is likewise an artistic statement on a world that is about to put itself in protectionist, anti-democratic, obscure structures and to abandon social diversity as well as access to spaces that elude surveillance.
The event takes place within the framework of Operaland.

Palindrome
Palindrome plays in a fictive universe where time has started to go backwards - where the years count downwards, the clocks are reversed and technology is slowly decaying. Henri, a film archivist living in the reversed 1930s stumbles upon an old film roll, that depicts time flowing in the normal direction.
He invites two American curators - Iris and John - to his Parisian home cinema in an attempt to convince them to spread his movie, and thus maybe halter the moonwalk of time. The film he has found namely bears ominous signs of an upcoming new world war...
Palindrome is a filmic experiment with surround sound, that stands on the border between cinema, theater and installation. An essential part of the plot is conveyed through the sound - Henri, Iris and John never appear on the screen, they only exist on the soundtrack so to say. The surround sound is used to give the viewers the feeling that the characters sit among them in the audience. Dialogues and sounds not only come from the front speakers, but from all four walls of the cinema hall. From the back wall one can hear the humming of an old projector, from the middle of the room the whispers of two visitors and from the front a curious voice holding a monologue about the film shown.
Utilizing the surround sound in an experimental way, Palindrome tries to create and encourage a new way to experience cinema - a new spatial cinema, where the fiction is not only limited to the screen, but now encompasses the whole cinema hall.

PROMETHEUS LYOMENES AIR - Preview
PROMETHEUS LYOMENES AIR is the new performance project from Niels Wehr which will premiere at Staatstheater Darmstadt in 2019. The idea departs from the Prometheus myth, which has been narrated throughout the last 2000 years. The work is based on the fragment 'Prometheus Unbound' by Aeschylus. It will touch on the realms of the ancient choir and the individual.
Niels and his team are happy to present a research preview funded by the Fleetstreet Theater Hamburg.

Pulp - History as a warm wet place
We asked ourselves how wetness and stickiness could be a way of tracing the sliding of time. We started to build an intuitive archeology digesting the leftovers of the past 400 years in disrupted references. A soft, wet, shapeless mass of material that allowed our bodies to be unsynchronized. Hands became older than the rest of the body and we had to learn how to use them. Five bodies monstrously transforming, supporting each other with slippery and sticky hands.
Carolina Mendonça, Catalina Insignares, Ida Daniel, Rodrigo Andreolli and Zuzana Zabkova are working once more in one of the different configurations in which they collaborate, expanding the notion of choreography and the body as a site of knowledge production, in particular those devalued by Western epistemologies.

Retrospective
We are looking back, in order to look forward. To upcoming collaborations, fundings and part-time jobs. We are at the beginning of our careers. And we might as well be at the end: both options are very thrilling. One is sure - we are in the middle - of work, of life, in the middle of the pool of ever-changing conditions, and in the middle of waiting.
"Retrospective" investigates the relationship, difference and border between the work that we want to do and the work that we must do. It questions the conditions of artistic work with all its privileges and affirms the power of negation and silence. "Retrospective" aims to open up to the ways of saying No, while staying in the structure and pretending to ‘play by the rules’.
Romuald Krężel played in 22 different TV commercial campaigns in Poland, Germany, Ukraine and Belarus. Some of his most successful commercials were for Bosch, Nutricia Foundation, Kaufland and Tyskie. The commercial for the painkiller Metafen was broadly recognized and awarded in the prestigious Polish Advertising Competition in 2014, as well as in other prominent advertising competitions. Romuald is a specialist in playing sympathetic, cool father roles and average, nice guys with a strong sense of comedy. In his free time, he is a passionate reader of critical theory.

ROUGH PROPOSALS 2018
It’s that time of year again! For four days, students of the Master Program “Choreography and Performance” at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies in Gießen take over the Mousonturm once again. During the festival, they turn conventional rules on their heads. Curating, producing and performing merge one into the other until everything becomes an object of choreographic analysis. Economic structures, political activism, the rhythms of daily life, boundaries between violence and trust, post-ironic narratives and much, much more conquer the stages, foyers and corridors of the Mousonturm. “Rough Proposals” presents sketches and finished performances, opening up artistic realms of thought and inviting in experimentation.

Sous la plage
Sous la plage is a lecture performance on the construction of the European discourse on the Arab springs and the so-called “refugee crisis”, and a electroacoustic concert on the construction of identity and memory. With the help of a series of sound and video players, played live by the Syrian-born Palestinian journalist Mohammad Bitari, Sous la plage orchestrates a composition of acoustic and visual landscapes through the use and contraposition of documents coming as much from media as from subjective discourses, with the aim of providing a space of personal and critical reflection to counter the flood of of Europe-biased news.

Theatermaschine 2018
THEATERMASCHINE ATTACHES A LIGHTER OR SENSITIVE STRUCTURE TO A MASSIVE CARRIER.
THEATERMASCHINES ARE USUALLY HEAVIER, FIRMER AND MORE VIBRATION RESISTANT THAN THE COMPONENTS TO BE FIXED ON OR UPON THEM.
THEY SHOULD PROVIDE SECURITY AGAINST GROUND SEEPAGE WHICH THEY ARE MEASURED FOR.
THEATERMASCHINES APPLY AS AN INTERFACE BETWEEN DIFFERENT FUNCTIONAL AND STRUCTURAL AREAS.
OFTEN, THEY FULFIL BOTH THE FUNCTIONAL CRITERIA OF THE SUPPORTING AND THE FIXED STRUCTURE.
SPECIAL FORMS SERVE DISCONNECTION OR SEPARATION OF STRUCTURES (E.G. ELASTIC FOUNDATIONS OR ACTIVE SUPPLEMENTS).
THEATERMASCHINES MAY ALSO BE PART OF A LARGER STRUCTURE THAT WILL BE FOUNDED AGAIN.
Theatermaschine is the yearly exhibition of students' works of the Institute of Applied Theatre Studies (JLU Gießen) which presents current works all over Gießen such as performances, installations, stage plays, workshops, concerts, critic talks and lectures.
This year's Theatermaschine constitutes a metaphorical construction side from the 30th of May until the 3rd of June. This (non-) space unfolds in the constant act of becoming and evolving whereby the newly constructed changes constantly and might never be considered concluded.

WHAT ON EARTH
In „WHAT ON EARTH“, Caroline Creutzburg and her team imagine the earth’s crust as the main player along with its sediments and substances. Hardly conceivable – but let us assume, the world of today could be abstracted from all human activity and human omnipresence, which so self-evidently surrounds us, could be reversible: the news on the displays would disappear; air traffic would be stopped; data streams would cease; exports would stay within warehouses. All emission of noise, of images, of warmth, of information would run dry. Earth would show itself and it would tentatively tense its muscles. Not in apocalyptic destruction, but rather in the existence and continuation of manipulated and manipulative matter, the horrendous is to be expected.

Distance as a contemporary plague. Distance: psychological, physical, linguistic, mental. It’s a phenomenon that keeps us apart, but paradoxically ties us together, creating volumes, relationships.
Distance is like water, it’s an invisible volume separating us, but at the same time binding and embracing. It’s crucial and essential for any object, being, space, relation.
But just as a line in Euclidean space, it can’t exist without at least two points. We are three points of many lines, here are our three distances.
