Concept of the BA study course "Applied Theatre Studies"

The BA degree course is designed to build on theatrical-historical and theatrical-theoretical basics as well as imparting artistic technical basic competence, which enables independent artistic work onstage and in the studios. Our degree course is geared towards students who still often have a relatively non-directional interest in theatre, performance and life art and who only begin to focus on an individual area during their studies:- Literature, dance, music theatre, aesthetic theory, acoustic art, performance, video installations etc. Therefore, we enable a considerably wide range of teaching together with contributing disciplines.

The degree course consists of modules from Applied Theatre Studies as well as modules from the contributing disciplines, which include various language and cultural areas and philology, art history and music science, namely German language and literature studies, English language and literature studies, Romance studies, Slavonic studies, ancient culture, art history, music science and philosophy. The contributing discipline seminars, lectures and practical courses should enable broad orientation and impart a pool of inter-disciplinary expert knowledge. The Applied Theatre Studies seminars, lectures and practical courses deal with theory, aesthetics and semiotics of theatrical processes as well as with the relationship between theatre and the connected arts in the form of theoretical seminars and exercises as well as artistic projects mit historical and contemporary theatre forms.

The various activities provided by the guest professors complement these suggestions. The fact that the guest professors are not just international but also come from various disciplines, corresponds to our view of contemporary theatre, for which impulses come from the fine arts, music and dance, architecture, film and new media and for which the challenges of other cultural areas are existential. During the guest professors' artistic projects (from the areas of stage direction, choreography, performance arts, artistic writing etc.), the students get to know a variety of different artistic creative working processes and perspectives of theatre and connected arts through chosen established artists or also renowned people from the area of science. At the same time, they find a place here to develop and form their individual artistic approach. During practical coursess, students are also introduced to various professions pertaining to the theatre and to artistic techniques and mediums (e.g. stage technics, video editing, sound studio, body, acting, dance and voice training, set-building, light design, photography, press and publicity). The BA degree course also includes an internship at a theatre or in media.

The BA degree course is completed with the title „Bachelor of Arts“. It is an important goal of the degree course to train artists, who reflect upon their practical work theoretically and thoreticians, who develop their theories from practical dialogue.

Main classes

Due to the wide universe of discourse, which brings the performative arts from the end of the 19th century into focus, yet also follows historical connections, for example to the ancient world, to the renaissance or baroque, teaching is carried out according to the model of exemplary learning. Scientific research as well as artistic practice refer to exemplary learning and requires a large amount of independent competence.
The degree course consists of theatrical-scientific compulsory modules chosen from a range of modules as well as modules from contributing disciplines (German Language and Literature Studies, English Language and Literature Studies, Romance Studies, Slavonic Studies, Ancient Cultural Studies, Philosophy, Art History, Music Science). The theatre science modules are characterised by a close interlocking of artistic and scientific theatre practice and theatrical and practical exploration of theatrical forms, contents and questions.

In the theatre science modules, the students shall be introduced to the theoretical and practical basics of the subject in the seminars and practical courses and in theoretical seminars as well as artistic projects, will look into historical and contemporary theatre forms, theory, aesthetics and semiotics of theatrical processes as well as into the relationship of theatre with other arts (music, dance, film) and theatre with society.

During the artistic projects with the guest professors, the students become acquainted with various artistic and creative working processes and perspectives of theatre and connected arts and form their own artistic approach. During the practical courses, the students are introduced to various professions, pertaining to the theatre and also to artistic techniques and mediums.
