The Division of Landscape Ecology and Landscape Planning was founded on October 1st, 1994. It is part of the Institute of Landscape Ecology and Resource Management (ILR) within the faculty for Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Environmental Management. The subject Landscape Ecology is concerned with ecological aspects of the functional relationships between ecosystems and landscapes. Our main task is the analysis of patterns and the diversity of interactions of plant populations and plant communities with their environment. We want to understand the relationships of compositional, structural and functional components of biodiversity on different spatial scales. Our research results are aimed to further the balance between the demands of land-use and the requirements of biodiversity within the cultural landscape. Projects within the subject area of Landscape Planning are consequently carried out with the aim to establish scientifically sound foundations for nature conservation.

Landscape Ecology

Agricultural ecology

  • Modelling of species occurrences and species numbers and in mosaic landscapes
  • Biodiversity in cultural landscapes
  • Species conservation-oriented management of nutrient poor grassland habitats
  • Impact monitoring and evaluation of conservation measures
  • Significance of small structures on the biotic potential
  • Significance of set-aside on the biotic potential
  • Functions of key species in habitats of low productivity
  • Fitness and genetic diversity of arable weeds
  • Research on invasive species
  • Research on halophytes
  • Population biology of river valley species
  • Investigation on the soil seed bank of different habitat types

Landscape ecological studies in Eastern Europe and Western Africa

  •  Development of monitoring procedures for large-scale biosphere reserves
  •  Dry Forest and savanna vegetation in a Ghanain semi-urban environment

Village ecology

  • Village habitat mapping in rural settlement areas
  • Utilisation structure and functions with respect to species conservation
  • Ecology and population biology of ruderal species
  • Nature conservation in (landscape) parks

Plant use in winter gardens and green houses

  • Investigations on the composition of suitable plants for winter gardens

Conservation of the biotic potential of golf courses

  • Investigations on the land use history and biodiversity of golf courses

Landscape planning

  • GIS-supported, nature conservation orientated, vegetation planning and management
  • GIS-supported management and development rules for parks
  • GIS-supported concepts for species conservation oriented, environmentally sound, land use
  • GIS- and aerial imagery supported conservation and land -use concepts for continental arid areas
  • Planning and monitoring of measures for the re-establishment of rare and endangered biocoenoses in agricultural landscapes
  • Public awareness raising on conservation issues, e.g. town ecology trails
