Learning outcomes

Students will be able to do the following:

  • Have a deep knowledge of the principles of metabolic regulation at the molecular and cellular level
  • Be able to discuss how the metabolism of nutrients is regulated in the organs
  • Know the molecular mechanisms of receptors and signal transduction
  • Know the interactions between the structure and function of enzymes/proteins
  • Understand immunological processes and their interactions with the environment
  • Know the significance of proteome and transcriptome analyses in biochemistry and nutritional science

Module contents

  • Receptors and signal transduction of eukaryotic cells
  • Compartmentalization of metabolism with regards to the special functions of the organelles
  • Enzymes (structure, catalysis mechanisms, inhibition, regulation, linear and non-
    linear regression, enzyme diagnostics, coenzymes)
  • Chaperones, post-translational modifications, control of objectives of proteins, protein reduction
  • Differential genome and proteome analyses and their evaluation
  • Nucleotide metabolism and its dysfunctions
  • Immunology (complement system, allergies and their prevention/treatment,
    immunological tests)
  • Interactions between nutrient contents and genes (e.g. in cancer)
  • Nutrition and infection (mycotic, bacterial, viral, parasitic)
  • Apoptosis (cascades, regulation, markers)
