Learning outcomes

The students will do the following

  • Receive an overview of intermediate metabolism.
  • Understand diseases relevant to nutritional sciences and their underlying pathomechanisms.
  • Understand the therapeutic procedures derived from pathobiochemistry as well as their nutritional supplementation

Module contents

  • Molecular fundamentals of digestions and absorption of food components
  • Hormonal regulation of the intermediate metabolism and its related disorders
  • Disorders in the amino acid metabolism
  • Disorders in the lipid metabolism (hyperlipoproteinemia) and resulting illnesses (arteriosclerosis), significance of the adipose tissue as an  endocrine organ for the development of the metabolic syndrome
  • Disorders in the carbohydrate metabolism (e.g. fructose intolerance)
  • Disorders in the nucleotide metabolism  (Lesh-Nyhan syndrome, hyperuricemia)
  • Neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, prion diseases)
  • Basics of immunology (food allergies, autoimmune diseases)
  • Blood, acid-base-balance (acidosis, alkalosis)
  • Blood clotting and hemoglobinopathies, hereditary anemias
