Expertise: The lab of Sybille Mazurek focuses its research on comparative characterization of the metabolism of differentiated cells, adult stem cells, tumor cells, and cells infected with viruses and parasites. In the last four years, among other things, a method platform was established that enables a risk assessment for environmental chemicals based on their metabolic signature in cell cultures and generates nutrient requirements for cell culture, which accelerates tenogenic and osteogenic differentiation of equine stem cells. Using endothelial cells infected with Besnoitia besnoiti as an example, the first attack points in metabolism were identified, whose inhibition leads to reduced multiplication of the parasites. Established techniques include cell culture, determining metabolites and metabolic conversion rates with the help of HPLC or a benchtop random access clinical chemistry analyzer, and determining expression rates, isoenyzme patterns, activities, and complex generation of enzymes with the help of western blots and free flow isoelectric focusing.
