Mission Statement
To understand neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer is one of the major challenges of the 21st century since the global trend in the phenomenon of population aging has dramatic consequences for public health, healthcare financing and delivery systems in the world. In addition to age, noncommunicable, diet-associated diseases such as diabetes and obesity are major risk factors.

Our interdisciplinary team is dedicated to investigate the underlying mechanisms of ageing and neurodegenerative diseases as well as its  modulation by food-based prevention and pharmacological intervention.

Gunter Peter Eckert who leads the reserach group is full-professor for nutrition in prevention and therapy.  He works at the interface of nutrition, nutritional medicine and pharmacology. Together with an in-depth knowledge in toxicology his expertise as food-chemist and pharmacologist allows him the competent assessment of food and its differentiation from drugs.
