Project 3: Male-female interaction

Schistosomes harbour a unique reproductive biology. They are one of the few trematodes which have developed seperate sexes. Additonally the female sexual development, the development of the reproductive organs, and the production of the eggs, is dependent on the pairing contact with the male schistosome. This is important in different aspects, but mainly in regards to the pathogenicity of the eggs and the role of eggs in reproduction of the parasite. A detailed understanding of these processes is a important alternative treatment option.
