The following pets may not be imported into Iceland: pregnant bitches, pregnant cats, nursing bitches, nursing cats, pets which have undergone surgery prior to importation and which require surveillance or treatment of any kind and dogs from the following breeds of dogs or mixtures thereof: Pit Bull Terrier/Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, Dogo Argentino, other dog breeds in accordance with the decision of the Minister of Agriculture, having sought comments from the Chief Veterinary Officer and mixtures of wolves and dogs.

First of all, the pet has to be identifieable by a microchip that complies with the FECAVA or ISO standards. Within the last 365 days prior to importation, dogs and cats arriving from countries with rabies have to be vaccinated against rabies using an inactivated vaccine. At the time point of vaccination against rabies the animal has to be older than 12 weeks. No earlier than 30 days after vaccination a blood sample has to be tested and the rabies neutralization antibody titre needs to be at least 0.5 IU/ml. If the titre is lower, the dog or cat can not be imported into Iceland. The animal has to be re-vaccinated and tested again after 30 days. Dogs and cats may not be imported into Iceland until 120 days have passed from the time of the first rabies vaccination; an animal therefore has to be that least 7 months old at the time of import to Iceland. If the animal has been revaccinated yearly and the rabies neutralization antibody titre is at least 0.5 IU/ml, the dog or cat may not be imported earlier than 30 days after the last revaccination.

In addition, dogs have to be vaccinated against leptospirosis, distemper, HCC and parvovirosis. Cats have to be vaccinated against panleucopenia, feline rhinotracheitis virus and calicivirus. The time period between these vaccinations and import has to be at least 30 days. Please find further information with regard to these regulations on the link listed below. In addition, during the last 30 days before departure a blood testing against brucellosis in dogs, against FIV and FeLV in cats as well as faeces examination on salmonella have to be performed. During the last 10 days before departure the animal has to be treated for tapeworms with an approved veterinary medicinal product containing the active ingredient praziquantel. Furthermore, a treatment for external parasites has to be done using an approved veterinary medicinal product containing either of the active ingredients fipronil or permethrin. If ear mites are suspected the dogs and cats should be treated with a product registered for the use against these mites.

All dogs and cats for which importation into Iceland has been permitted will remain in an isolation facility for a period of four weeks.
