Import into EU from third countries

Pets imported from third countries (i.e. countries and territories outside the EU) which are not listed in the EU-directive 998/2003 have to meet the following regulations:

The animal needs to have a tattoo or a microchip. The interval between the last vaccination against rabies and blood sampling has to be more than 30 days. If the antibody titre is 0.5 IU/ml or higher the animal is allowed to travel 3 months after blood sampling (if the other regulations are fulfilled). This rule does not apply if the animal is sampled in an EU country prior to export (re-entry). A health certificate,, in which the test result for rabies antibody titration is registered, is obligatory for the import. For the re-import a pet passport with the confirmation of a sufficient rabies antibody titre is needed. For export and re-entry into the EU please note that third countries may have their own import regulations.
