Detection of SARS-CoV2 in pets
We have set up a test for SARS_CoV2 RNA in samples from pets. We can test swabs (nasal- or pharyngeal swabs), blood samples (EDTA blood), faeces and organ samples.
SARS-CoV2 / COVID-19
Due to the SARS-CoV2 pandemic, operations at Justus-Liebig-University are severely restricted. Viro Vet Diagnostics is currently not affected. We ensure patient care in the field of veterinary medicine. However, there may be problems or delays in sample transmission and sending reports. We will inform you as soon as there are new developments.
Changes in rabies certificates
Subsequent changes in rabies certificates are generally not possible. Exceptions exist in the following cases:
- transmission errors by our laboratory,
- uncritical changes as a result of e.g. turners of numbers or missing individual digits, after written confirmation by the sender (veterinarian),
- changes to non-critical data (e.g. name of the animal).
The changes are identified in the certificate.
Owner Data in Rabies Certificates
The EU Data Protection Regulation requires us to refrain from unnecessary processing of personal data. Information on the pet owner is not required in rabies certificates, as the unique data refer exclusively to the respective animal (in particular the transponder number).
We will therefore refrain from the automatic entry of owner data in the certificates with immediate effect.
The validity of the certificates is not affected by this measure. Even with a change of ownership, the certificates remain valid.
Infection of dogs with bocavirus
Canine bocaparvovirus 2 (CaBoV-2) is a member of the virus family parvoviridae but distinct from the classical canine parvovirus (CPV-2). The name "Boca" originates from the first two members of the genus namely bovine parvovirus and canine minute virus also known as canine parvovirus -1. Bocaviruses play an important role in human medicine in combination with respiratory illness in children.
Few years ago a new member (CaBoV-2) of the bocaparvovirus group was discovered in dogs with respiratory illness. The role of CaBoV-2 in canine disease is not absolutely clear since the virus was also detected in healthy animals. Recently CaBoV-2 was detected in puppies that suffered from a lethal enteric infection (1). The demonstration of the viral genome in cells of the gastrointestinal tract and lymphoid tissues pointed towards an etiological role of the virus. In another recent case CaBoV was detected in two 4 week old pubs with acute diarrhoea and vomitus (2).
Standard diagnostic methods for detection of canine parvovirus do not cross react with bocaparvovirus. Therefore we have developed a specific PCR for CaBoV. Using the new assay we were able to show CaBoV-2 in a number of cases with classical parvovirus symptoms but negative test results for CPV-2.
