History of Medicine

Welcome to the Institute of the History of Medicine!

 

The range of activities in our department includes research on the history of human and veterinary medicine as well as medical ethnology. Additionally, we offer classes and lectures for the students of human, dental and veterinary medicine and we organise a variety of academic events; e.g. colloquia dedicated to history of medicine and science, lectures and readings. We gladly welcome listeners from all faculties.

Our main concern is to use historical, cultural as well as creative approaches to encourage considerations relating goals, valuations and presuppositions of medicine and medical activities

Special projects in the field of teaching are the seminar „medicine on the fringe of society“, as well as a curriculum with the main focus on global health. In cooperation with the Department for Modern German Literature and Cultural Studies we also hold an interdisciplinary event about „medicine and literature“ which includes discussions and author readings. Additionally, we publish our magazine “in weiß” (“in white“).
