The University of Florence is a state university founded in 1321 with more than 60,000 students and 12 faculties with 39 courses. The university has a medical faculty involved at high level in different areas of medicine. The Division of Rheumatology has been created in 2003 and is now a recognised center with expertise in Rheumatology and connective tissue diseases.

Professor Matucci Cerinic and his coworkers are focussed on rheumatic diseases and SSc research, in particular on vascular pathogenesis, on nervous involvement and transplantation with more than 300 peer-reviewed publications. The centre is a EUSTAR and a Scleroderma Clinical Trial Consortium member. With regard to his observational trial OT1 on prevention and treatment of digital ulcers, Prof. Matucci Cerinic has specifically published several papers concerning the early and very early diagnosis of SSc and the treatment as well as prevention and the new classification of digital ulcers.

Team

Professor Matucci Cerinic is Professor of Rheumatology, Chairman of the Department of Rheumatology, Chief of the Division of Rheumatology and director of the Regional centre for the study and care of  SSc with an extensive experience in basic laboratory work and clinical studies. He has served as vice-president of the Scleroderma Clinical Trial Consortium and as chairman of EUSTAR from 2004 to 2010.

Dr. Serena Guiducci is Assistant Professor of Rheumatology, she had a Postdoc in Center of Experimental Rheumatology, Department of Rheumatology (director: Prof. S. Gay), University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland and won an ACR/EULAR International Academic Exchange Program scholarship. In the past years, Dr. Guiducci has worked on SSc (vascular tone control, Raynaud's phenomenon, markers of endothelial derangement and activation, stem cells transplantation and mesenchimal stem cell, markers of disease activity in endothelial damaging diseases). She is experienced in clinical management of patients with verly early SSc and is presently in charge of the VEDOSS outpatient clinic.

Dr. Silvia Bellando Randone is involved in the management of very early SSc patients, is in charge of the transplantation programme of the University of Florence, and she is presently a PhD candidate with a project on very early SSc.
