UCL houses a major medical school and the largest critical mass of biomedical research in UK and one of the largest worldwide. There is intramural expertise in all aspects of the proposed programme of research especially in the field of autoimmune rheumatic diseases including SSc. The Centre for Rheumatology houses a unique and well-characterised cohort of patients across the SSc disease spectrum. Documented data include disease on-set, organ-based complications, autoantibody status and disease sub-set and person specific outcomes. On-going evaluation of over 1,500 patients allows serial sample collection for analysis of biomarkers and pathogenic mechanisms during the natural disease history.

Team

Christopher Denton is Professor of Experimental Rheumatology at UCL and Consultant Rheumatologist at the Centre for Rheumatology, Royal Free Hospital, London. Professor Denton’s laboratory research has focused on mediators of vasculopathy and fibrosis in connective tissue disease and preclinical models. He leads the large clinical programme in scleroderma at the Royal Free Hospital and co-ordinates multidisciplinary care for more than 1,200 patients. The scleroderma centre has played a prominent role in many recent clinical studies in SSc, Raynaud’s phenomenon and connective tissue disease associated PH.

The team is completed by Dr. Voon Ong, a clinical senior lecturer and research physician, and a research assistant to manage and coordinate clinical research.
